Homework: Over the next two weeks use the syllabus to

create a full set of revision notes on topic 6 (Respiration)

Why is this reaction so important?

Our cells need a constant supply of energy.
Respiration takes place in ALL of our cells,
ALL of the time.

Are these statements correct?

I pity the fool

who thinks
breathing is
respiration

Definitions
Respiration is the chemical reaction that break down nutrient
molecules in living cells to release energy.
Aerobic respiration the chemical reaction in cells that use
oxygen to break down nutrient molecules to release energy
Anaerobic respiration is the chemical reaction in cells that
breaks down nutrient molecules to release energy without
using oxygen
Respiration involves the action of enzymes in the cell

What are the uses of energy in

the body?

muscle contraction
protein synthesis
cell division
active transport
growth
the passage of nerve impulses
maintenance of a constant body temperature

What is respiration?
Respiration is the process that the body uses to release
energy from digested food (glucose). It is a chemical
reaction.

This type of respiration is called aerobic respiration

because energy is released in the presence of oxygen.
How do the glucose and oxygen needed for aerobic
respiration get to the all the bodys cells?

Our important systems...

If we now think back over the journey of oxygen and digested

food through the human body, we will realise that they both
end up in the same place.

Every living cell needs to respire

Therefore, the raw materials for the energy-making
process eventually arrive at the body cells.
This energy-making process is known as...

R E S P I R A T I O N
Each living cell is supplied with food and oxygen in
order to generate energy.

What is anaerobic respiration?

Aerobic respiration uses oxygen to break down glucose.
It releases a lot of energy from each glucose
molecule by breaking it down completely into carbon
dioxide and water.
Glucose + oxygen carbon dioxide + water
C6H12O6 + O2 CO2 + H2O
