These two events pushed the tensions of both nations to their


limits.

T - The Treaty with Japan


1. Sparkled the rising of the
anti-Japanese former leader
called the Taewongun, he
then tried to overpower King
Kojong and held a rebellion
which destroyed the Japan
embassy and killed several
officers.

2. The Japanese
government demanded an
apology from Korea.
Receive reparation fine and
the Japanese have the ability
to place troops at their
embassy at Seoul.

3. Taking the opportunity of the
decreased Chinese troops in
Korea (due to conflict with
French), the new government
that supported Japan rose
against the remained troops
but soon be defeated.

In 1894, the uprising of a religious group (Estern Learning)
with the purpose of stopping Japan and China to invade
Korea.

The Korean government asked for the Chinese troops to


suppress the rebellion. Japan also sent troops to Seoul
(Chinese troops are 40 miles away from Seoul).

The rebellion was put down, but the Chinese


and Japanese troops still remained at
Korea.

S - Sinking of the Kowshing


During the transportation of
the last Japanese ship,
Kowshing, under the
supervision of three other
Japanese ships (Yoshino,
Naniwa and Akitsushima). it
met two Chinese gunboats
(Tsi Yuen and Kuang Yi).

When the Chinese gunboats
were passing through,the
Naniwa suddenly fired at the
Tsi Yuen and the shooting
began. Tsi Yuen then ran
away, Kuang Yi got highly
damaged. In the end, the
Japanese then sink its own
Kowshing.

Proved the power of Japanese naval system.

29/7/1894, Battle of
Asan: Last pre-war battle
The Japanese crossed over the
base of Chinese troops at
Songhwan near Asan. In the end,
the Japanese troops won.
Chinese troops retreated to
Pyongyang.

1/8/1894, Sino-Japanese
War officially began.
During the war, China
withdraw from Korea to
protect their border.

24/10/1894: The first


Japanese troops
marched into Manchuria,
China.
From the previous win, the
Japanese troops marched
into Manchuria through the
Yalu river. The Chinese troops
lost.

19 & 21/10/1894: The


second part of troops
moving into the Liaodong
Peninsula.
They dominated four cities,
including Port Arthur - one of
Chinas main ports.

2/2/1895: The naval


base at Weihaiwei taken
by the Japanese troops.
For the next ten days, series
of struggling fights of the
Chinese occurred, none was
significant.

By the time Chinese government realized that


they already lost Manchuria and the Pescadores
Islands ( 3 days battle), the Japanese troops
were on their ways marching to Beijing.
Government immediately seeked peace.

1. The benefits for Japan


Treaty of Shimonoseki: On 17/4/1895, the Qing
(China) and the Meiji (Japan) emperors signed the
Shimonoseki Treaty. Which grants:
i. All supreme control over Korea to Japan.
ii. Japan have the right to take Formosa (Taiwan), Liaodong
Peninsula and Penghu Islands.
iii. Trading conditions: China opens up 5 treaty ports for Japan,
grant the right to access the Yangtze River.
iv. Post-war reparation fee: 200 millions taels of silver.( about
75 599 kg of silvers)

2. The consequences for China

i. Japanese now have power over the


ports of China => economically
damaged.
ii. Exposed the weaknesses in the
military and naval system.
iii.Losing Korea as one of the
subsidiary country.
