Internal Combustion
Engines
Definition:
is composed of mutually constrained
and related parts that convert the
pressure generated in the cylinder into
rotational motion.

Internal Combustion
Engines
Parts:
Cylinder
Cylinder head
Piston
Piston rings
Connecting rod
Crankshaft
Flywheel
Valves
Spark Plug

Engine Terminology:
Bore (D) diameter of the cylinder
Stroke (L) distance the piston moves
from bottom dead center to top dead
center
Piston Displacement (PD)
measurement of size. Equal to the volume
displaced by the piston as it moves from
BDC to TDC.
Clearance Volume volume of the
cylinder when the piston is at top dead
center
Total Volume volume of the cylinder
when the piston is at bottom dead center.
Compression Ratio ratio of total
volume over clearance volume.

Internal Combustion
Engines
Sample Problem:
Determine the compression ratio
of the engine with the following
specification:
Total Volume -70cc
Bore
-4cm
Stroke
-5cm
