War is a violent display of human nature. In the

poem, Dulce et Decorum Est, Wilfred Owen
uses structure to reveal the reasons behind why
he wrote such an emotive poem. The poem has
four stanzas, each showing different aspects
and realities of WWI. The first depicts what it
was like for soldiers, the second and third place
the reader on the frontline and the fourth begs
the audience not to believe the old lie.

Writing body paragraphs

The first stanza of the poem describes the impact of war on

soldiers physical moral and appearance. The simile, Bent like old
Beggars implies that soldiers fighting in the war appeared
scruffy, dirty and homeless. The connotations, emphasized by the
use of alliteration associated with a beggar reveal a sense of
despair that the soldiers would have felt. The entire first stanza
focuses on the soldiers as being like the walking dead, this is also
through men marched asleep.. The use of personification of the
gas shells disappointedly fell.. implies that war was tiresome
and exhausting for all involved. This is important as Owen is
aiming to reveal to the reader the utter helplessness of the
soldiers and degalmourise any previous glorious images of a
soliders which had been so readily accessed to the public through
propaganda.
