What Is Anorexia Nervosa?


A condition in which a
person is constantly
dieting. They fear they
are gaining weight.
It is when a person is
obsessed with becoming
thin and doesnt see
when he/she becomes
dangerously thin.

What Is Anorexia Nervosa?

The person might
stop eating and/or
exercise excessively.
It is an illness that is
a result of emotional
problems and usually
affect people who
think they need to be
perfect.

What are Effects of


Anorexia Nervosa?
Low heart rate and
body temperature
Muscle break down
Heart damage

Slow or lack of
sexual maturity and
growth
Low self-esteem
Depression

What Is the Treatment for


Anorexia Nervosa?
5-20% of anorexics die of starvation without treatment.
Treatment requires a team of professionals including physicians, nurses,
psychiatrists, family psychologists, and dieticians.
Mental health counseling is required.

What Is Bulimia?
A disorder in which a
person binges on food.
A binge involves eating
large amounts of food
over a very short
period of time.
The binging is then
followed by purging
(throwing up or using
laxatives).

Throwing up causes the enamel on the teeth


to dissolve from exposure to acid from the
stomach. The teeth can decay.

The salivary glands become large from over-producing saliva
to prevent dehydration.
Throwing up can disturb the electrolyte balance in the body
and can result in abnormal heart rhythms and kidney
damage.
Excessive use of laxative disturbs normal bowel function and
diuretics can cause high blood pressure and dehydration.

What Is the Treatment for


Bulimia?
It is similar to anorexia but also
includes training in appropriate
nutritional eating habits, building selfconfidence and self-esteem.
30-50% of anorexics are also bulimic.

What Is Pica?
A disorder that involves eating things that are not food.
Ex. Clay, soil, starch.
It usually occurs among pregnant women. It can cause
blockage of the intestines and harmful bacteria illness.

What is overeating?
Compulsive overeating is characterized by
uncontrollable eating and consequent weight gain.
Compulsive overeaters use food as a way to cope
with:
stress
emotional conflicts
daily problems.
The food can block out feelings and emotions. Compulsive
overeaters usually feel out of control and are aware their eating
patterns are abnormal. Like bulimics, compulsive overeaters do
recognize they have a problem.

What is constipation?
When a person has
a difficult or
infrequent bowel
movements.

It is usually person that has a low-fiber diet, doesnt
drink enough water, does not exercise, stress, or some
diseases.
Try to limit high-fat foods. Eat more fruits and
vegetables and drink water.

What is Diarrhea?
When food moves
through the digestive
system too quickly,
this can cause
dehydration which
can be fatal.

If it lasts more than 2 days, call a doctor.


Drink water and/or drinks like Gatorade. Give kids
pedialyte and call a doctor.
Always follow doctors advice about giving new
foods to infants.

What are food intolerances?


Negative reactions to
specific foods that do not
involve the bodys immune
system.

What are food intolerances?

Ex. Lactose
Intolerance is when
you cant tolerate mile
products. These people
do not produce lactase,
the enzyme that breaks
down lactose in milk.
This can cause
bloating, diarrhea, gas,
and severe cramps.

Lactose pills can be


taken with milk
products.
MSG is another
food intolerance.

What are food allergies?

The result of the bodys immune system


responding to the food as if it were a diseasecausing organism.
The most common are cows milk, egg, peanuts,
wheat products, shellfish, and fish.

What happens to you during a


food allergic reaction?
Diarrhea, rashes, congestion, sneezing, itchy,
watery eyes.
Anaphylactic shock which causes sever itching,
hives, sweating, tightness in throat, difficulty
breathing, followed by low blood pressure,
unconsciousness, and death
Many allergies start at infancy. Dont give solid
foods until the doctor says and no cows milk
for 12 months.
