A WORLD OF PEOPLE
Indicators 2 Third Term, 2016
Seventh grade
Boston International School

Objective: Identify the physical

characteristics of the Earth and the natural
resources that affect the development of the
people and their culture.
Learning Objective: Recognizes the natural
resources found on Earth and their
classification.

Biblical Principle
The creator of Heaven and Earth listens
to my prayers.
Acts 17:24
24 God, who made the world and
everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven
and earth, does not dwell in temples made
with hands.

Earths Resources

Resources are the things people use to meet their

needs. We need resources every day. Earth is like a
giant spaceship that contains the resources
humans need to survive.

The resources that people use on Earth can be

divided into two different groups:
Renewable: is something from nature that can be
made again. Air, water, and all living things
including animals and plants, are renewable
resources. There will always be more of these
resources, as long as people use them carefully.

Farm products and lumber:

Plants and trees are another resource that
people use. Farm product such as wheat,
vegetables, and fruits are important
because all people depend on them for
food.
Trees also provide us with an important
resource- Lumber. With lumber we build
houses and make paper.

Nonrenewable: are those resources that

Earth made long ago. They cant be made
again, except over a very long period of
time. Oil, coal, and natural gas are example
of nonrenewable resources. Many of them
are important because they can be used as
fuel.
Coal, Oil, and Natural Gas MAIN SOURCE
OF ENERGY IN THE WORLD

COAL

OIL

NATURAL GAS

Beginning in the 80s ,

coal was burned to
make steam. The
steam was used to run
engines in trains,
ships, and other
machines. Coal is still
used today. It supplies
about 30% of the
worlds energy.

Oil is used to make

gasoline. It is also
used for airplane fuel
and to heat homes.

Natural gas is used to

heat homes and
factories. Natural gas
is used as an
alternative fuel vehicle.

CONSERVATION

ams/science/energy-light-sound/natural-reso
urces.htm
What do you think will happen as people
continue to use nonrenewable resources?
_________________________________________

Conservation means saving. We must

save resources and use them carefully, if we
dont do it many of these resources could
run out very soon.
It is not just nonrenewable resources that
need to be saved. Air, soil, and water are
renewable resources, they can be replaced,
but if they are not used wisely, they can
become dirty and unusable.

Saving a Rain Forest.

Saving natural regions on Earth is also a part

of conservation. Many people believe that
forests found in tropical climates are an
important resource for all life on Earth.
The largest rain forest in the world is the
Amazon rain forest in South America. This
forest had billions of trees and other plants.
Plants make oxygen. Some scientists believe
that the Amazon forest makes up to 60% of
the world oxygen.

POLLUTION

Pollution is the dirtying of Earths air and

water. Pollution isnt a new problem. Since
the beginning of the human life, people
have created garbage. However, in the
past, there were fewer people on Earth than
there are today.
Fewer people- used fewer resources
they created less pollution

AIR POLLUTION
* The air around us sometimes
contains many kinds of pollution.
* Coal and oil that are burned to make
electricity release gases into the air
* Polluted air can make it hard to
breathe.
* It can also harm crops and animals.

WATER POLLUTION
* This happens when garbage and
other wastes are put into rivers and
oceans.
* In the past, some factories emptied
polluted water into these bodies of
water. Later, plants were built to clean
the water.
* Oil spills are a dangerous kind of
pollution.

SEVEN WAYS TO PROTECT THE

ENVIRONMENT

We all want to protect our planet, but we're

mostly too busy or too lazy to put up big changes
that would improve our lifestyle and save the
environment.

These are 7 simple habits to implement in

youreverydaylife which will make a difference:
1. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs:
It is true that these bulbs are more expensive,
but they last much longer and they can save
energy and your electricity bill would be reduced.

2. Donate:
You have tons of clothes or things you want to get
rid of. If they are still usable, give them to someone
who needs them.
3. Turn off your devices:
When you do not use a house device, turn it off. For
example, if you don't watch TV, turn it off. Turn off
the light when you leave a room (even if you intend
to return.)
4. Walk or cycle:
Driving is one of the biggest causes of pollution.
Walk or use your bike if the journey is a short one.

5. Practice the 3 Rs Reduce, Reuse, and

Recycle:
Reduce the amount of waste you produce.
Then, instead of throwing something away,
reuse or recycle it.
6. Leaky faucets:
Watch leaky faucets. An average of 120 liters of
water can be wasted due to a dripping faucet.
7.Rainwater:
Think of recovering rainwater. This water can
be used for different purposes.

WORKSHOP
1. Write the definition of the following
words:
Geography:
Economy:
Government:
Resources:
2. How many types of land regions are
found on Earth? Name and explain them.

3. What are the Renewable and

Nonrenewable resources? Give examples
4. Why is the lumber an example of a
renewable resource?
5. Talk about Pollution.
6. List three things you could do to help
with the conservation of the resources.
7. How is the bible verse Acts 17:24 related
to the topic?
