Art Nouveau/Art Deco

(1920-1928)

Overview
-Influential movements: neoclassical, constructivism,
cubism, modernism, futurism, and vorticism.
- Art Nouveau: New Art in French
- Aimed at modernizing design.
- It was committed to abolishing the the traditional hierarchy of the arts.
- The purpose was to overturn the belief that paintings and sculptures were superior
to interior design and silver-smithing.

Overview
- It was the first widely popular style in the United States to break the rivalist
tradition of period houses.
- New inspiration and real originality.
- Government efforts to break up trusts and regulate businesses practices gave
way to bigger emphasis between businesses and government.
- The automobile industry was expanding.

- Art Deco was derived from the
Exposition Internationale des Arts
Decoratifs et Industriels Moderns in
Paris of 1925.
- It was to represent Modernism
turned into fashion.
- Post war mechanic style.

Architecture/Exterior Design
-Architecture in the 1920s was
designed with sleek, non-traditional
elegance.
-It was meant to show wealth and
sophistication.
-The basis of the designs were simple,
clean, geometric shapes.
- Smooth faced stone and metal were
exposed.

included: plastic, vita-glass,
ferroconcrete, jade, silver, ivory,
obsidian, chrome, and rock crystal.

Motifs were used throughout


architectural design, such as nude
female images, foliage, and sun rays.

Wall surfaces were usually smooth.


Often made out of stucco.

- Polychromy was used.
- Forms were simplified and streamlined.
- The designs were rarely used in houses, but more so for
commercial buildings and skyscrapers, such as The Chrysler
Building, and the Empire State Building.

Broadway was booming in the 1920s!

Jolson was a huge star, often performing in


blackface.

Jazz age contributed to the plot of the musicals.


Cinderella stories were transformed into flapper
girls who were drinking and smoking.
