Diesel Power

Engine
(Enginator)

Dr. Rudolf Diesel

Introduction
Diesel Engine invented in 1897. Rudolf Diesel
(Inventor) proved that fuel could be ignited without
spark & made first successful Diesel Engine.
A Diesel Engine is an internal combustion engine,
which operates using the diesel cycle. Diesel Engines
are manufactured in two stroke & four stroke
versions.

Diesel Engine
Types of Diesel Engine
There are two main types of internal
combustion engines.
One type is called a spark-ignition
engine. It uses electricity & spark
plugs to ignite the fuel in the engines
cylinders.
Second type, the diesel engine, is a
compression-ignition engine. When air
confined in a cylinder is suddenly
compressed, the temperature of the air
rises. In a diesel engine, each piston
compress air in a cylinder. Fuel is
injected & forms an explosive mixture,
which ignites spontaneously under
pressure.

Stroking in Diesel Engine

1.

Intake
Combustible mixtures are emplaced in
the combustion chamber.

2.

Compression
The mixtures are placed under pressure.

3.

Combustion / Expansion
The mixture is burnt, almost invariably a
deflagration, although a few systems involve
detonation. The got mixture is expanded,
pressing on & moving parts of the engine &
performing useful work.

4.

Exhaust
The cooled combustion products are
exhausted into the atmosphere.

AC Generation

Whenever the flux

associated with a
circuit is changed
on EMF is
induced in the
circuit. This EMF
lasting only so
long as the change
is talking flux.

Alternator
Alternator
An alternator is an
electromechanical device that
converts mechanical energy to
alternating current electrical
energy. Most alternators use a
rotating magnetic field but linear
alternators are occasionally used.
In principle, any AC electrical
generator can be called an
alternator, but usually the word
refers to small rotating machines
driven by automotive & other
internal combustion engines.
Large alternators in power stations
which are driven by steam
turbines are called turboalternators.

Comparison between 2 stroke &

4 stroke engine

4 stroke engine runs in specific

direction.

Thermal efficiency is low of

this engine.

Thermal efficiency is more

than in 4 stroke engine due to
positive scavenging.

In 2 stroke engine power

stroke is obtained in every
revolution of crank.

In the 4 stroke engine, a power

stroke is obtained in every four
strokes of piston or 2
revolution of crank.

At same speed & given size,

the engine should develop
more power.

Low power is developed in

this engine.

2 stroke engine can run in

any direction.

The design & layout of the plant are quite simple.

It occupies less space as the number & size of the auxiliaries is
small.
It can be located at any place.
It can be started quickly & can pickup load in a short time.
There are no standby losses.
It requires less quantity of water for cooling.
The overall cost is much less than others.
The Thermal efficiency of the plant is lower than other power
stations
It requires less operating staff.

DISADVANTAGES
1.
2.

3.
4.
5.

The plant has high running changes as the fuel is used is costly.
The plant does not work satisfactorily under overload condition for long
period.
The plant can only generate small power.
The cost of lubrication is generally high.
The maintenance charges are generally high.
