Ecliptic =
apparent path of
the Sun, moon and
planets

The stars of a constellation only

appear to be close to one
another by the projection effect.
The stars of a constellation may
be located at very different
distances from us.

Astronomers label stars within a constellation

based on apparent magnitude,
brightest= alpha (), second brightest beta
()..etc.

Some of the brightest stars have actual names,

like Rigel & Betelgeuse (constellation Orion)

The magnitude scale system can be extended towards negative

numbers (very bright) and numbers > 6 (faint objects):

Sirius (brightest star in the sky): mv = -1.42

Full moon: mv = -12.5
Sun: m = -26.5

Today, constellations are well-defined regions on the sky, irrespective

of the presence or absence of bright stars in those regions.

Circum means around and Polar refers to

the celestial pole.
In the Northern Hemisphere Circumpolar
constellations circle the North pole star
called Polaris.
There are five circumpolar constellations
visible throughout the entire year

Ursa Minor, Ursa Major,

Cassiopeia, Cepheus and Draco
