Emotional intelligence and it's correlation to

performance as a resident: a preliminary study
Talarico JF et al, J Clin Anesth, 2008; 20:84-89

No positive correlation between any facet of

emotional intelligence and resident
performance
EI as measured by the Bar-On EQ-I personal
inventory does not strongly correlate to resident
performance as defined at the University of
Pittsburgh
Yet, we are recruiting our PhD students by
intuitively assessing their EI!

16

Scoala doctorala 2014

Mentors responsibilities

Research laboratory experience should be at

all times a learning experience , engendering
appreciation of proper methods and conduct
and appropriate ethical considerations of all
those touched by the research

17

Scoala doctorala 2014

Trainees!

Must comply with rules and regulations as

observed directly or monitored indirectly by
the mentor

The breach of any established policy will come

to rest with the mentor as the individual with
overall responsibility for the laboratory group

18

Scoala doctorala 2014

Mentor Trainee relationship

= professional courtesy and trust in an

environment of collegiality
Monitoring the mentor / student relationship =
working together to create a Monthly Progress
Monitor e-mail at the end of every month.

19

Scoala doctorala 2014

Means of communication between students

and doctoral supervisors

E-mails useful, but not adequate, one needs

direct contact

Verbal and nonverbal cues, crucial to

establishing trust = the foundation of a strong
working relationship

Emoticons are not substitutes for real emotions

improvement in other domains: the patient-doctor

42

Scoala doctorala 2014

Conclusions

The senior mentors tend to disregard surveys,

probably due to a near retirement less interest,
or due to inabilities to comply with computerbased communication
Procrastination is an impediment to response:
face to face demand usually works.
Figures tell us that communication is still a
problem.
