Presentation Topic:

Delta Modulation and

demodulation

Delta Modulation:

It was introduced in 1940 as a simplified form of

PCM(pulse code modulation)
It is an example of differential Pulse code
modulation(DPCM)
The output of delta modulation is a bit stream of
samples

Definition:

ADelta modulation(DM or -modulation)

is an analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog
signal conversion technique used for
transmission of voice information where
quality is not of primary importance

Delta Modulation
Diagram:

Description:

comparator computes difference between input

signal and one interval delayed version of it
quantizer includes a hard-limiter with an inputoutput relation a scaled version of the signum
function
accumulator produces the approximation mq[n]
(final result) at each step by adding either + or

Noise in Delta
Modulation:
1. Slope overhead distortion
2. Granular distortion

Advantages of DM:

High Signal to noise ratio(SNR) benefit

Lower bandwidth consumption
Cost effective systems
Feedback Mechanism

Applications of DM:

DM technique is widely used in voice

transmission applications such as telephone and
radio communications, which use the principles
of modulation to transmit voice signal
frequencies over carrier signals. Delta
modulation is specifically applied where timely
data delivery at the receivers end is more
important than data quality.

Demodulation:
It is the process of getting back the
original message signal

Description:

decoder creates the sequence of positive or negative

pulses
accumulator creates the staircase approximation mq[n]
similar to tx side
out-of-band noise is cut off by low-pass filter (bandwidth
equal to original message bandwidth)

Conclusion:

Large step-size is necessary to accommodate a

wide dynamic range
Small step-size is required for accuracy with lowlevel signals
compromise between slope overhead and
granular noise
