Save endangered

species

An endangered species is a group (population) of plants

, animals or other organisms that is in danger of
becoming extinct. This could happen because there are
few of that animal left, its predators have grown in
number, or the climate that it lives in is changing, or the
places it lives in have been destroyed. The
World Conservation Union (IUCN) has worked out that
endangered species are 40% of all organisms.[1]
Many countries have laws to protect these plants and
animals. These laws can save species by stopping hunting
, land development or making parks and reserves. Only a
few plants and animals at risk of extinction, mostly
vertebrates, are put on the lists and get legal protection.
Many more species become extinct, or will become
extinct, without people knowing about it.

Save the Rhino
Internationals
vision is for all five
rhino species to
thrive in the wild
for future
generations. We
collaborate with
partners to
support
endangered rhinos
in Africa and Asia.

panda
Today there
are over
1,800 wild
pandas, but
they are still
considered an
endangered
species

elephant
Asian elephants were
never as abundant as
their African cousins,
and today they are
even more
endangered than
African elephants.
At the turn of the
century, there were
an estimated 200,000
Asian elephants.
Today there are
probably no more
than 35,000 to 40,000
left in the wild

owl
The Northern Spotted
Owl is also on the
endangered species list.
They have a lower
population to begin with
than other species of
owls. They too suffer due
to the destruction of their
natural habitat. They
continue to have to try to
find food and it gets
harder and harder for
them to find it. With the
natural habitat being
destroyed, the animals
they usually feed on
have also left to find
shelter and their own

tiger
The tiger population of
the Indian subcontinent
has suffered a serious
decline in the last 50
years. It is estimated that
only 200 tigers survived
in Nepal, and only 4,000
in India, up from 2,000 in
the 1970s. In the 1990s,
poaching has escalated
in China and Korea, in
spite of the Chinese ban
on tiger products in
1999. Tigers have been
hunted to near extinction
by poachers, and all
subspecies have been
declared endangered.

lion
Lions do face another
major threat: sport
hunting. The proposal to
protect lions comes in
response to a
2011 petition from five
conservation groups,
who revealed that
hunting occurs in 16 of
the 20 countries in which
lions remain and that the
number of lion trophies
imported back into the
U.S. by American
hunters doubled
between 1999 and 2008.

gorilla
In the wild their only
predators are leopards,
which can attack
vulnerable youngsters
and the biggest threat to
gorillas is man. In recent
decades gorilla
populations have been
affected by habitat loss,
disease and poaching.
Subsequently all gorilla
species are classified as
endangered by the
International Union for
Conservation of Nature
(IUCN).

Red wolf
The red wolf]), also known
as the Florida wolf or
Mississippi Valley wolf,[6]
is a canid of unresolved
taxonomic identity native to
the eastern United States.[7]
[8] It is generally,
morphologically, an
intermediate between the
coyote and gray wolf, and is
of a reddish, tawny colour.[9]
[10] The red wolf is a
federally listed
endangered species of the
United States, and is
protected by law.[11] It has
been listed by IUCN as a
critically endangered specie

how to save endangered

species

One of the best ways to protect

endangered species is to prevent
their decline and deterioration in
the first place. Toward that end,
National Wildlife Federation works
to maintain healthy populations of
fish, wildlife, and plant species
through promoting broad-based
conservation efforts such as
