Building

Baucis
By Rhia Crouch

Introduction
In our very first project we were asked to create three pieces of
concept art that explored one of the cities that is described in
Italo Calvinos book Invisile Cities (1972). The main base of the
book is a conversation between the merchant Marco Polo and
the Emperor Kublai Khan with Polo describing 55 cities all of
which are split into different groups and all differ from each
other in their culture, setting and atmosphere. Likely we only
looked at 19 of them.
Out of all of them the city that catch my eye was Baucis, the
third city from the Cities & Eyes group. The city is described as
being raised up from the ground on slender stilts and being
lost above the clouds made me think about the technology or
the level of intelligent the inhabitants must have to be able to
build a city so high up. However, I also got the feeling that the
buildings would be in someway stacked on top of eachother.

Influences
My influences for Baucis did change quite
abit after seeing that my first ideas for it
wouldnt work all that well. I did keep the
same colour ideas for the city, earthy browns
and greens, so the that city reflected the
forest environment it is located in. My main
base idea for the citys buildings came from
looking at ramshackle buildings and the way
that they would sometimes be built on top of
each other. I also had the idea of looking at
villages that were built above water to get
an understanding of ways in which the city
could be held up.
