General Introduction to the work in 3GPP

Work in 3GPP is organized around the

concept of release which can be defined
as a complete set of functionalities for a
full cellular network allowing new set of
services to be deployed by operators
After completing a long evolution of the
Wideband CDMA radio technology, 3GPP
decided to work on a new concept of radio
technology to allow further evolution
having in mind a long term evolution. LTE
was born. But this does not stop
completely parallel evolution of the
WCDMA

LTE Access Network Architecture

LTE Standard
Layer 1 specification
It can be separated in 2 parts
First part resulting from the work in RAN WG1
dealing with the description of the physical layer is
now subject to the correction phase since last term.
Functionalities described are complete and no major
changes are expected. Set of specification
contained in 36.2xx series
Second part mainly concerning the Requirement and
the Performances still need to be completed but this
is already considered as complete at 60% level. It is
anticipated that this should be completed in
December 2008. This work is mainly in the hand of
WG4. This is a key activity as it is the premises for
the tests activities. Set of specification contained in
36.1xx series
9

Layer 2 and Layer 3 (Signaling over

Interfaces)
Over the radio interface:
Mainly under responsibility of RAN WG2
It covers all aspects related to the MAC, RLC and
RRC
Set of specification contained in 36.3xx series

In between the Core and the Access Network

Covers all the aspects from physical layer of the
interfaces S1, X1 and X2
Set of specification contained in 36.4xx series

10

User Equipment Testing activities

WG5 is in charge of defining the test
specification for the User Equipment designed
by 3GPP. This covers the two following
aspects:
Tests of the User Equipment part covering the Radio
Interface (Access Stratum)
Tests of the User Equipment part covering the
User/Core Network interface (Non Access Stratum)
Work has already started. Discussion on the priority
of test development between TSG RAN and the
Working Group started in June and are still under
way

Introduction to LTE advanced

17

LTE Advanced
ITU-R is currently investigating 4G and has
solicited all organization for proposing
technology as candidate for radio interface
3GPP had recently organized two workshops to
examine this request
At the last plenary it has been decided to answer
to ITU-R with an evolution of the radio technology
already proposed in as an IMT 2000 technology:
LTE
Here follows the foreseen evolutions already
under study in 3GPP
18

Main Characteristics for LTE Advance

The objective of Further Advancements for EUTRA is as follows:
Define a framework for further advancements of EUTRA and E-UTRAN (to be referred to as Advanced
E-UTRA and Advanced EUTRAN considering:
The time schedule of ITU-R
That the work on Advanced E-UTRA and Advanced
E-UTRAN must not introduce any delay to the
completion of the Release 8 specification of E-UTRA
and E-UTRAN
That the general enhancements of specifications for
Release 8 E-UTRA and E-UTRAN are maintained and
progressed in a focused and efficient manner.
19

Define requirements for Advanced E-UTRA and Advanced EUTRAN based on the ITU-R requirements for IMT-Advanced as well
as 3GPP operators own requirements for advancing Release 8 EUTRA AND E-UTRAN considering:
E-UTRA radio technology and architecture improvements
Support for all radio modes of operation
Interworking with legacy RATs (scenarios and performance
requirements)
Backward compatibility of Advanced E-UTRA and Advanced EUTRAN with Release 8 E-UTRA and E-UTRAN i.e.
an Release 8 E-UTRA terminal can work in an Advanced E-UTRAN,
an Advanced E-UTRA terminal can work in an Release 8 E-UTRAN and
non-backward compatible elements could be considered based on
RAN decision

Newly identified frequency bands and existing frequency bands,

and their advantages and limitations, in particular, the
consideration of the WRC-07 conclusions, to ensure that
Advanced E-UTRA can accommodate radio channel bandwidths
commensurate with the availability in parts of the world of
wideband channels in the spectrum allocations (above 20 MHz)
and at the same time being mindful on the need to accommodate
those parts of the world where the spectrum allocations will not
have availability of wideband channels

20

Identify potential solutions, technologies for the Advanced

E-UTRA and Advanced E-UTRAN. The study areas include:
Physical layer
Radio interface layer 2 and RRC
E-UTRAN architecture
RF, including Aspects of wider channel bandwidth than 20
MHz
Advanced system concepts
To develop documents that will serve as a basis for the
documentation to be submitted to ITU-R to provide the
3GPP proposals for IMT-Advanced:
An Early Proposal submission that would be sent to ITUR, to be agreed at RAN #41 (9-12 September 2008), for
submission to WP 5D #3 (8-15 October 2008).

21

A Complete Technology submission that

would be sent to ITU-R, to be agreed at RAN
#44 (26-29 May 2009), for submission to WP 5D
#5 (planned for 10-17 June 2009).
A Final submission to incorporate updates,
additional specific details or feature additions,
and the required self-evaluation that would be
sent to ITU-R, to be agreed at RAN #45 (22-25
September 2009), for submission to WP 5D #6
(planned for 13-20 Oct 2009).

Conclusion
As can be seen from the previous slide
3GPP is fully busy for a certain number of
years with covering at the same time:

Evolution of WCDMA
Completion of the development of LTE
Definition of LTE advance
LTE is part of IMT advance process in ITU-R
and 3GPP will provide the SDO with the
evaluation of the technology
