due to it being quite big. The colour of the font is a bright red colour, the colour red signifies love and boldness. The masthead also has a black stroke around it which also makes it stand out more. The masthead catches peoples eye because of the bold colour and serif font used. It would be one of the first thing that the audience would notice on the front cover.
The main image for this magazine is of
the rapper Dizzee Rascal. The shot type used is a full body shot, this is shown by the audience being able to see the rappers whole body from head to toe. All magazines have a main image which is usually of a famous figure. The rapper on the front cover could be seen as an influential figure and this relates to the magazine as it is to do with the genre music. The magazine would attract the target audience due to it having Dizzee Rascal on the front cover. In the image, he is wearing baggy jeans, trainers, a vest and a gold chain. The mise-en-scene of the gold chain shows that the chain is important due to it being a main thing that rappers would wear. The mise-enscene also shows that the background of the image is of graffiti and would therefore attract an audience due to colours that stand out. It would therefore stand out to a younger audience and fans of Dizzee Rascal. The rapper also has a huge smile on his face, which would attract people to buy the magazine. The smile on his face also shows that he is a lively person and would attract people due to a positive energy.
Located here is a puff which reads; NEWS,
PAVEMENT REUNION, Wowee Zowee its on!. This stands out due to the colour of the puff being red, which links to the mise-en-scene of the colour scheme. The words Pavement Reunion are also in a white font which stands out across the red background. This would catch the audiences eyes because it is bold.
This is also a puff, however it is not in a
bubble/shape. This is also part of a tagline and it makes the readers more intrigued as it is part of a special offer. Located on this part of the magazine, below the puff is a cover line which is a sort of preview to let people know what artists are featured in the magazine. They would be intrigued as they might be some of the target audiences favourite artists. The font used is part of the theme of the magazine, this makes it fit in. The colours (red and black) used also help it fit with the colour scheme. This is due to the use of mise-en-scene. Placed in this area of the magazine is a cover line. This is one of the only smaller cover lines on the magazine. The cover line has the word blur above it which has been enlarged a bit and is also quite bold. This makes the smaller cover line stand out and catch peoples eyes. Below the enlarged writing that says blur, it has some smaller information about the feature inside of the magazine. The word blur is also in a white font, this makes it stand out against the background which is red. The smaller writing below is also white and is in a thin serif font.
The main cover line of the image of the magazine is Dizzee
Rascal, I'm spreading joy around the world, man!. This catches the audiences eye due to the bold, white font that has been used. The name Dizzee Rascal stands out lots due to it being big. The audience would want to know how he is spreading joy around the world and would therefore be intrigued to read inside. The rappers name is important as it shows his relevance and relationship to the magazine, this is also shown by the way his name is in capital letters. There isn't many cover lines on the magazine so this shows how important it is to the whole concept. The rappers name also has a shadow behind it and this makes stand out.
The rule of thirds is used in this image
to have a clear layout on the front cover and this would attract the audience. The barcode is placed in a dead area of the magazine as it isnt an important feature. The rappers face is also in one of the main hotspot corners of the magazines which is important as it is a normal convention of creating magazines.
Located on the top centre of the page is
the magazines name, NME. It is in the typical red font and is quite bold. It is over a black background and on the right side of it is the title contents. The title contents is white and looks a bit stretched, this makes it stand out. It especially stands out due to it being on top of a black background, this would therefore make it easy for the audience to recognise that its a contents page. Overall, the words on top of the black banner stand out due to the colours used. The mise-en-scene used for this feature is based on the colour scheme as it thoroughly follows this theme throughout.
Under the name of the magazine (NME) and title
(contents) is the date line, which reads 26 th September 2009. This feature has been used to let the readers know when the magazine issue has been released. This is a common feature in magazines and is almost always used. The dateline stands out because it is over a black background and the writing used is white.
On the left hand side of the
magazine, there is an index section. This is here to let people know where things are more easily. Index pages are usually there for people to be able to locate things more quickly, easily and efficiently. Most magazines dont have this sort of feature and this therefore makes it a USP for the NME magazine.
Located at the bottom of the contents page is
an editors message. Editors usually feature this on their magazines so that readers can feel a connection with them. It is also a direct mode of address. The editor mentions what pages specific artists or important articles are on. The editor also uses a rhetorical question at the start of his message and this helps to engage with the readers more. The font used is white and serif, it is also on top of a black banner. This helps it to stand out and to help catch the readers eyes due to the colours used whilst producing it. On top of the message, it says touring special in a white, rustic font.
The main image on the contents page is of a
woman who has her hand on a coach. This anchors with the heading below that says touring special. The shot type used is a canted angle as it has been tilted. The woman is wearing a vest type top and has iconography use as she has bracelets on her wrist. Her hair has also been put into a type of bun. This is a direct mode of address as well as she is looking at the readers of the magazine. The picture also has a border around it and this makes it looks like it has been stuck onto a magnetic board. The main image has also been centred in the middle of the page so everything revolves around it. This shows the importance of the photograph used.
Located on the right side of the magazine
are subheadings for the magazines and articles that are featured in it. The subheadings on the magazine are; news, radar, reviews, live and feature. The subheadings stand out because they are in bold, white font and are on top of a black banner (like the contents title at the top). This makes them stand out because people will be able to pick out important features more easily. The subheadings also have page numbers by them. The page numbers are red, they follow the mise-enscene of the colours as the follow a set scheme. The page numbers will make things easy for people to find as they will know what page the things are on. Under the main subheadings are normal headings which are smaller and are in a bold font. These headings give people an insight as to what is featured.
In the bottom right hand corner of the
magazine, there is a section about subscribing to the magazine. This is one of the terminal areas on a magazine and this will catch peoples eye. The font colours used for the writing on this section are yellow and white, these are bright colours and are in a bold font. This will therefore attract peoples eyes and make them want to subscribe. There are also two smaller images of magazine covers there which would attract people to subscribe as they have famous icons on the front cover. Due to it being in a terminal area, people will have the image in there mind and will therefore think about it. There are also contact details there for if people do want to subscribe to the magazine. It also gives them a reduced price cost.
The main image on the double page spread of
this magazine is of the rapper Dizzee Rascal, who is also featured on the front cover. Dizzee looks like he is about to cause trouble or do something mischievous. The main image takes up the whole of the page. The audience would be attracted to this page because they would like Dizzee Rascal. The background of the image has graffiti, which also anchors to the main image as there is also some graffiti on the background of that too. The rapper is wearing a white t-shirt, red jacket and blue jeans. The colours red and white that he is wearing also links to the mise-en-scene of the colour scheme, which also links to the front cover. Dizzee Rascal is wearing clothes that a stereotypical rapper would wear and clothes that the direct target audience would find stylish. As previously mentioned, the rapper has a mischievous facial expression which may suggest he is doing something bad, he looks like he is looking in a different direction to see if anyone is watching him. His facial expression used shows that there is no direct mode of address used as he is not looking at the readers. The type of shot used to take this image is a medium long shot, as you can see from his knees up. Other forms of iconography used on this double page spread are empty bottles of alcohol, plastic cups and some sort of boom box, which all show a representation of what things are in a rappers life.
The magazine follows the codes and
conventions of the rule of thirds as four columns have been used whilst making the double page spread. There have been two used on the left side, and two used on the right. The main image used stands out a lot on the double page spread and so does the headline.
Mise-en-scene has been used in the image
through the use of graffiti which has been featured on the background. It shows that the main figure in the magazine is doing graffiti, which denotes an image of a bad man. It also shows him doing something that's naughty, this may attract readers as the graffiti is colourful and stands out.
The double page spread has a headline on the top
right side that says; From TAGS to RICHES. The headline is in big, black and bold font which stands out a lot. It is very big as it takes up almost half of the right side of the page. It also stands out a lot because the background is white and this makes the font catch peoples eyes. The different words in the headline are different sizes. For example, the words tags and riches are much bigger than the words from and to. This feature has been used because then the readers will know exactly the topic of the actual text is. This makes it a good feature to be used as people will catch core information. The words tags and riches are also in a thicker font than the other words used.
Next to the headline of the article, there is a really
small caption that mentions the person who took the image of Dizzee Rascal and the person who wrote the article. This tells the readers who helped to construct this page. This is in a smaller font because it isnt really that important and the readers wont care that much.
Below the headline, there is a subheading for the article
that speaks a bit about the year Dizzee Rascal has had, this gives the readers more of an insight of his life. This font used is serif and the rappers name has been given a bolder font. The writing is a bit bigger than the actual article font itself. The overall impression of this double page spread shows Dizzee Rascal and his life changes, it also denotes rappers and the lifestyle that they have. It shows his lifestyle and about how is has gone from tags to riches.
In the bottom right corner, a second
image has been used of a boom box, alcohol and cups. These images are smaller and anchor to the whole concept of the page due to it being a factor of a rappers lifestyle.
There is the actual article presented in this area of the
magazine, the font used is quite small and is a serif font. The article talks about Dizzee Rascal and his life, which would attract readers that like him and his music. The article anchors to the image because it is about him. There is also a drop cap at the start of the paragraph which is noticeable because it is big and bolder than the rest of the text. This is a used convention to let people know where the start of the paragraph is. Drop caps are a frequent convention in magazine articles.
Something that all three of the magazine features have in
common is that they have a main cover line. For example, the front page has one about Dizzee Rascal spreading joy around the world, the contents has a touring special and the double page spread has one that says from tags to riches. Another thing that all of the magazine features have in common is that they all include a main image. On the front cover and the double page spread, there is a main image of the rapper Dizzee Rascal whereas on the contents page there is a main image of a woman touching a tour bus. Having main images in magazines are important and are a big part which can be used to attract the target audience. The main cover and double page spread contents have used mise-en-scene through the use of having graffiti on the backgrounds which is used to denote trouble makers. The front cover, contents and double page spread also follow a colour scheme with the main colours being red, white and black. This is shown throughout the magazine and have been used with things ranging from fonts to main images. Another thing that has been indentified in all three magazine features is that they all use bold and enlarged fonts in some way to make the words stand out. Mise-en-scene has been used on the front cover, contents and double page spread by the clothes
