Using Visual Aids for ELLs

When introducing new vocabulary to ELL students
teachers may use class visual aids to assist
students when communicating and working on
reading for English.
Before going over reading material with students,
the teacher can make word banks and other
visual aids so that while the class is reading aloud
the student can refer to these visual aids for
assistance.

Link New Information to Prior

Knowledge
Teachers should communicate with student one
on one or in groups about what they like to do or
on their culture and education experiences. They
can also get an understanding what the each
student knows and doesnt know.
Teachers should allow students to read material
Teachers may allow students to read on material
that they are interested in or have prior
knowledge in so that they are comfortable with
the reading material.

Modify Vocabulary Instructions

for ELLs
When working with ELLs on pronouncing new
vocabulary, instructors must provide practice for
students so that they can become comfortable
with speaking and using the new word.
When speaking and listening to students, teacher
will pronounce the word first so that the student
can understand the words, the student will do the
same until they can pronounce the words clearly
and fluently.

Modify Test and Homework for

ELLs
Teachers may modify test and homework by
allowing the student to have the test or
homework done orally so that they can better
understand what is being asked.
Teachers can also make modification to test and
homework by providing the ELL student with
option based off their strengths and weaknesses.
This gives the students the opportunity to
succeed.

Use Cooperative Learning Strategies

Using cooperative strategies with student can
assist the student in communication skills
drastically. The students can break into groups
and hold complete conversations with one
another with the teacher monitoring the
conversations.
Working in groups also provides students with
responsibility working with others and completing
a specific job for the group.
