Analysis of front cover page

-1

The masthead of the magazine is

written in red and is outlined with white
and black strokes to make it look bold,
drawing the audiences attention to it.
They have placed this on the top left of
the page, which means they have
followed the conventions as this is
where the masthead is usually placed.

The main image is of Dizzee Rascal,

a famous hip hop artist. It is a long
shot of the singer crouching on the
floor and looking joyous. The image
has maintained direct address with
the audience by making Dizzee look
directly at the camera. This creates
a sense of intimacy as the singer
seems like he is looking right at the
viewer, which grabs their attention
and creates a connection. The rule
of thirds has been applied as
Dizzees face has been placed in a
region that people are likely to look
at it.

NME uses cover lines on the magazine to show what some of the
articles will be about . The cover lines have been inserted with a
bold white font, which stands out against the background. The main
cover line should be apparent as it is what a customer may judge
the magazine by. The main cover line links to the main image as
they mention the name of the rapper and include a direct quote
from him on the front cover to suggest that the magazine has come
in contact with the musician and include some content based on
him.

The rest of the cover lines are

also highlighted in white font and
relate to music, therefore giving
an idea as to what the magazine
is about so if people were to
make a judgement based on the
cover lines, theyd know what
the magazine will contain.

Analysis of Front cover - 2

The mise-en-scene of the

costume that the singer has
worn indicates the genre of
the magazine as he is wearing
informal clothing such as a
white vest top, jeans, trainers
and a chain around the neck,
which are stereotypically
thought to be worn mostly by
hip hop and rap artists. His
attire creates an informal and
comfortable vibe as he is
dressed in clothing that a hiphop artist is thought to wear
when with friends or
performing etc.

The background of the image shows an area that

has a wall covered with bright coloured graffiti. This
is typically linked with young male teenagers,
perhaps signifying the target audience. It also may
be used to create a joyous atmosphere as the
colours in the background are very vibrant and there
are lots of different designs and patterns to create a
lighter mood.

The colour scheme of the

magazine is bright red and
white. These colours attract a
audience of both genders as
the colours are not associated
to a specific gender. The
colours used on the cover are
very bright and bold and make
the specific brand stand out
compared to others. The fact
that the magazine uses these
colours for the magazine is
important as they brand the
magazine, so if people glance
at it, theyll be made aware of
the brand
of the magazine.
The magazine
has placed
the barcode at the bottom
right of the cover in a place
that does not disrupt or
cover any of the cover lines
or images, therefore it has
been placed in a
conventional way as
barcodes are usually placed
in corners, where it is less
likely to cover the content of
the front page.

Analysis of contents page - 1

The NME content page
relates to the front cover as
it follows the colour scheme
of the front cover. Red,
black and white are
common colours used by
the front cover and the
contents page.

The page includes the NME

logo in red, next to the
content page. It is in a bold
colour to remind the
audience of the brand of the
magazine. They have given
the logo a white stroke to
highlight the logo more.

NME has chosen to place the

information about each article in
the magazine on the left side of the
page in red font. They have chosen
red as the font because it stands
out against the white background
and draws more attention. The have
placed the page numbers next to
the description in the colour black
to make it clear what page the
article is on.

They have placed an image in the

middle of the page, which links to
one of the articles in the magazine.
The colours used in the image are
similar to the colours used for the
layout of the pages (colour
scheme). The mise en scene of
clothes and props relates to the
genre of the magazine as her style
of clothes is what was typically
worn by female rock or indie
singers. The tour bus in the back
also relates to the genre as this is
what famous people use to go on
tour.

Analysis of contents page - 2

The title contents is displayed

clearly next to the logo to make it
obvious what the page contains
and it is placed over a black
background to make it stand out.
The magazine is following
conventions by placing the title at
the top of the page and close to
the logo as they are typically
placed in a place where they are
clearly visible to the audience.

The contents page includes an

advertisement at the bottom
right of the page. The advert
advertises their own brand and
gives information on how to
access the magazines etc. This
is done quite often on a
magazine as they wish to
promote their brand.

Beneath the image they have

placed a brief excerpt of the
article to give the viewers an idea
of what the article will be about
and to gain their interest. They
have chosen special quotes from
the article and placed them on
the contents page to make the
viewers want to know more and
feel engaged.

On the right side of the page

they have written the names
of different categories such
as news, radar, reviews
etc. Under these categories
they have written down the
article page numbers which
relate to them.

The first page of the double

page spread shows an
medium shot of the hip hop
artist Dizzee Rascal. The
image takes up the whole
page and shows the artist
standing beside a wall full
of colourful graffiti with a
spray can in his hand. The
artist is not looking at the
camera, therefore a
convention is broken as
there is no direct address
through the image. This
convention may not have
been followed as the
magazine is a well-known
brand therefore already
have a strong fan base. It
may also not have been
followed because direct
address was used in the
picture on the main page,
which already established a
connection. The use of
graffiti in the background
might indicate the target
audience, as graffiti is
usually associated with
teenagers and young
adults.

The heading of the article is written

in bold black font, which makes it
appear very clear and the wording
gives us a basic insight as to what
the article is about. By saying from
tags to riches, we know that the
article will be based on the rappers
life

The clothes the rapper is wearing in

the image are informal and also
relate to the stereotypical image of a
hip hop artist. He is wearing a bright
red jacket and jeans, which is mostly
what young males would wear when
in a informal environment., also
giving a clear indication of the target
audience.

The writer and the

photographer have been
mentioned to show who
wrote the article.
The second side of the
double page spread also
has images underneath it.
The items in the picture are
of glass alcohol bottles,
fallen plastic cups and a
music player. This gives an
indication of what the artist
will say about his life in the
interview and engages the
reader.

The subheading beneath

the heading also gives a
brief description of what
the article/interview is
about. This is usually done
by all magazine brands to
give a brief idea as to
what will be written in the
main article.

All three pages share the same

colour scheme of black, white
and red. They all also have
centred images on each page
and have some sort of
description of the article that
the image is based on. All of
the pages have bright and bold
titles or headings to inform the
viewers what each page
contains or will be based on. All
three of the pages use slang or
informal words, either to
address the audience or when
quoting, in general, for
example, addressing the
audience using the word man.
The content of all the pages is
music or artist based/related
and they give information on
the life of specific musicians.
