In this unit will learn to use the USED TO shen talk about
in the past.

Dennis stopped smoking two years ago. He doesn't smoke any more.
But he used to smoke.
He used to smoke 40 cigarettes a day.
He used to smoke = he smoked regularly for some time in

the past, but he doesn't smoke now. He was a smoker, but now he isn't.

USE OF USED TO DO

We use the USED TO DO expression to talk about:

- An activity that we did regularly in the past (like a habit)
- A situation that was true in the past

I used to smoke

We use used to do to talk about the past. It is not a tense but it is

like a tense. It is a special expression. We use the expression used
to do for the past only.
Structure of Used to do

Used or use?
when there is did in the sentence, we say use to (without d)
when there is no did in the sentence, we say used to (with d)

Use of Used to do
We use the used to do expression to talk about:
an activity that we did regularly in the past (like a habit)
a situation that was true in the past

We can use the expression used to when we wish to refer to a past habit
which has now stopped.

Example:
I used to go to that shop but now I dont go there anymore.
The usual question form and possible answers with used to are:

question: Did you use to see them very often?

answers: Yes, I used to. / No, I didnt use to. / No, I never used to.
Remember that use and not used is used after did and didnt.
