Effective Leadership in

Coaching

Presented for the

California Community College Athletic Association
Presented by
James M. Page II, Head Assistant Coach, Cabrillo Community College

Leadership is an Art
To be a leader means,
especially,
having the opportunity
to make a meaningful
difference
in the lives of those
who permit leaders to lead.

Principles of
Leadership

Understanding and Accepting

Diversity

Abandoning to the strengths of

others

One who serves

Innovation

Being Responsible
To the PLAYERS?

To the TEAM?
To the PROGRAM?

To the COMMUNITY?

What do leaders
owe?To the FANS?
To their FAMILY
To the ADMINISTRATION?
To the PARENTS?
To THEMSELVES?

The first responsibility of

a leader is to define
reality.
The last is to say thank
you. In between the two,
the leader must become
a servant and a debtor.

Action and
Application

Defining Reality:

Leaving behind assets and a legacy:

Giving others the space they need to grow and learn, while respecting their individual strengths

Momentum and Effectiveness

Building lasting relationships with players, coaches, the school and the community. Fostering a
team environment of togetherness (one falls, we all fall), teamwork and respect.

Space and Strengths of Others

Supporting a successful enterprise financially, in competition, and by creating a reputable

program and a legacy that strengthens it over time

People:

Understanding the college, community, team and coaches I work with and for

An effective program uses good communication and hard work we all pull our fair share to
achieve a common goal.

Thank you.

Lastly, and most importantly as DePree eloquently notes, being in service means being in a
state of constant and steadfast appreciation for others and what they bring to you, your team,
your program and your own success.

My Personal
Philosophy
My personal philosophy is to be the best
possible version of myself through hard-work,
commitment to my values and by being a
role model to the young people I am
privileged to coach, teach, mentor, inspire,
and serve.
