After studying classical piano and
guitar into his teen years, he
discovered his true love of new age
and world music. He ditched his job
in the family business and in 2002
began dedicating himself to music
full time. In his last four albums,
the multi-talented composer has
created music inspired by the
music of north Sumatra, the
birthplace of his ancestors. He is
driven to learn and experiment
with Batak music and instruments
while updating their sound with
modern keyboards and electronics.
He continues to collaborate with
Batak musicians in his state of the
art studio in Jakarta, where he
hopes to produce other groups
dedicated to promoting and
modernizing the traditional sounds
of Indonesia.

Musisi dan Produser Konser

Profesional Musicians and
Producers Professional Concert
Erwin Gutawa (EG), suatu nama yang tak asing dalam
penyelenggaraan konser. Dalam setiap konser EG, selain
menjadi konduktor Erwin Gutawa Orkestra (yang
dibentuknya di Jakarta pada 1993), aranjer musik untuk
seluruh lagu yang disuguhkan, serta pemain bas dalam
penampilan grup Karimata, ia juga bertindak sebagai
produser konser bersama Jay Subijakto. Ia didukung oleh
promotor yang betah menyokongnya, Dian Tanjung, dari
Vocuz Entertainment.

 Si nomor dua dari tujuh anak pasangan (almarhum) Gutawa Sumapraja

dan Sariati Kodiat ini mulai memperoleh pendidikan musik formal

dengan mengikuti les piano klasik selama dua tahun, sedari ia masih
duduk di kelas 4 SD di Jakarta. Sejak di kelas 6 SD, ia nge-band secara
amatir sebagai pemain bas.
Pria kelahiran Jakarta ini mulai terjun ke industri musik rekaman dan
panggung secara profesional pada 1980, sebagai pemain bas dalam
grup Trans yang dipimpin oleh Fariz RM. Ketika itu ia masih belajar di
SMU di Jakarta.
Dalam periode SMU pula, ia mulai bergaul dengan permainan orkestra
untuk musik pop. Ia menjadi pemain bas dalam, antara lain, Orkes
Telerama yang dipimpin oleh (almarhum) Isbandi dan pernah secara
reguler muncul di TVRI.
Isbandi-lah yang memberinya pengalaman pertama membuat
aransemen musik untuk lagu yang dibawakan oleh orkestra. "Kalau
enggak salah ingat, saya harus bikin aransemen musik untuk lagu
Tudung Periuk," kenang Erwin. "Saya bikin di kertas besar, saya bawa ke
mana-mana sampai lecek dan baru selesai dalam 10 hari," lanjut Erwin
yang menggarap aransemen 25 lagu untuk Konser EG selama sekitar
dua bulan.
