MYTH OR FACT?
Bullying is just, stage, a normal part of life. Boys will be boys.
Answer: Myth
Fact: Bullying is not normal or socially acceptable behavior. We give bullies power by our
acceptance of this behavior.

If I tell someone, it will just make it worse.

Answer: Myth
Fact: Research shows that bullying will stop when adults in authority and peers get
involved .

Myth: Just stand up for yourself and hit them back

Answer: Myth
Fact: While there are some times when people can be forced to defend themselves, hitting
back usually makes the bullying worse and increases the risk for serious physical harm.

HOW TO RESPOND TO BULLYING

Walk away from the bully. Bullies want to know they have
control over your emotions so dont react with anger or retaliate
with physical force.
Report the bullying to a trusted adult. If you dont report
threats and assaults, a bully will often become more and more
aggressive.
Say NO or Stop doing that. Bullies want to feel control over
others.
Strength in numbers. Surround yourself with peers that have a
positive effect on you. Keep your distance from a bully.

PRACTICE A SCENARIO
Partner up.
Read the scenario.
Discuss strategies for responding to a bully in each situation.

SCENARIOS
1. You are playing basketball on the playground with your friends. After you
miss a shot, Buster the Bully yells, You are the worst basketball player
at this school! He then pushes you down onto the black top and you
skin your knees.
2. Your teacher asks you a question in science class and you answer
incorrectly. Buster the Bully laughs out loud and whispers, You are
stupid. A pre-schooler would have known that answer.
