Confidence

Intervals
Aka interval estimate
Foo Wee Nee
Kevin Kong Jun Wai

If we consider everything we know, we

actually know 2 things
What we know
How sure we are about it

Important in estimation and determining

the uncertainty - process of determining
a likely value for a population parameter
based on a random sample

How wrong the results are from the true

values in the study population
May be used for categorical and
numerical data
Expressed as percentage or a probability
that a specified interval will contain the
population parameter

90%, 95%, 99%

True value probably lies within this
region, where probably means 95%
likely
Eg:
Birth weight mean = 3.55kg (lower CI:
3.35kg; upper CI: 3.76kg)

Larger sample gives narrower CI => less

uncertainty
