Objective

To measure Carbon Monoxide, Hydrocarbon

and Carbon Dioxide from vehicle according the
regulations applied in Malaysia.
To ensure that the emission of the gaseous
pollutant did not exceed the standard.

Introduction
During the experiment, we have tested 2 different type petrol vehicles
which is Demak and Yamaha FZ150i.
Both of vehicles have different values of gaseous test : Carbon
Monoxide, Hydrocarbon and Carbon Dioxide.
We need to conduct the experiment with accelerate the engine to a
moderate speed (3rpm) with no load for 15 seconds then return the
engine to idle speed, during that situation the reading of three gaseous
is taken by insert the sampling probe into the exhaust pipe.
The result of two vehicles need to be compare by follow the requirement
of Sixth Schedule (Regulation 11) Environmental Quality ( Control of
Emission From Petrol Engines) Regulations 1996.

Results
Demak (A)

Yamaha FZ 150i (B)

CO

1.01%

0.24%

CO2

-0.10%

1.90%

Hydrocarbon

1978 ppm

2292 ppm

Discussion
Based
on this experiment,

The value of emission of CO for vehicle A were much higher than

vehicle B, however its still not exceeding the permissible limit
made by EQA.
Then, the value of hydrocarbon detected for vehicle A was 1978
ppm while vehicle B was 2292 ppm. In this parameter, both
vehicle do not comply with the standard and exceeding the value
of permissible limit of 600 ppm.
The emission for vehicle A gave value of -0.10% while vehicle B
gave emission value of 1.90. However this standard value was not
provided in EQA.

The value of the parameter exceeding the permissible limit were

probably because of the owners attitude for not conducting the
suitable maintenance or service regularly thus resulting
unsuitable emission value.
Precautionary steps :
no load applied while taking the reading - increase load will increase
the petrol and power usage thus increase in the emission of gases
that reading were taken at 3 rpm - the speed 3 rpm indicate normal
driving of vehicles.

Conclusion
This experiment are one of the best method of
controlling the carbon emission from vehicle with full
implementation of EQ (Control of Emission from Petrol
Engines) Regulation 1996.
For CO, both vehicles A and B emission value are 1.01%
and 0.24% respectively are comply with the standard
Hydrocarbon value are 1978 and 2292 for vehicle A and
B respectively.

However, for hydrocarbon parameter, both vehicles

emission value are exceeding the allowable limit at 600
ppm.
As a recommendation, this experiment can be improved
by preparing the vehicles with a load so that we can
determine the exact or closer amount of emission of that
vehicles on the road with occupants.
