OPEN ENDED RESPONSE WRITING

Goals:
As a result of this training, faculty will be able to:
implement the writing literacy skills to write an open
response
model the seven steps for open-response writing for their
students (and colleagues)
instruct their students in the open response writing process
using guided practice and independent practice
apply the seven steps for open response writing to their
content area
assess their students writing using the NYS writing rubric

Steps to Teaching Open Ended Response Writing


1)Read the question (set a purpose).
2)Circle any key direction words in the question and
underline important information.
3)Restate the question (as a thesis statement).
4)Use active reading strategies to read the article.
5)Take notes to respond to the question using the active
reading strategies.
6)Write your response carefully using the Step Up to Writing
T Chart.
7)Reread and edit your response.

Mastery Learning Objective:


After Reading Carnivorous Plants, you will write a 5 paragraph
essay identifying three reasons that explain why Carnivorous plants
are more resilient than other plants.
Criteria for Success:

Restate the question into a thesis statement.
Use key words from the text.
Use transition words where appropriate.
Details to support your thesis statement.
5 paragraphs, (thesis statement, 3 paragraphs with details and
evidence, conclusion)

Circle the direction words in the question.

Underline important information
Often some information is in a question is irrelevant (not
important) to finding the answer.

reasons that explain why the plants are more resilient than
regular plants using details from the article to support your
response.
