ELL School Plan

Courtney Sobotka, Sarah

Redick, & Shannon Peer

Grandview School
This elementary school has 500 students, 100 of
which are eligible for your ELL/ESL program.
There are 4 different languages, just about equally
divided among the 100 ELL students. Out of the
100 students at each grade level, 20 of them are
ELL. A majority of the ELL students are at Stage
1/Stage 2 of English language development.
There are 5 grade levels (A-E) in Grandview
school, 4 classrooms at each grade level. Each of
the 20 classrooms has approximately 25
students1 classroom teacher per room.

1.
Each teachers class schedule will differ; however,
each class receives the same structure. Each class
will have designated times for English Language
Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies/Science, a
special period (ex. gym or art), Lunch and Recess
During the first period of English Language Arts
from 9:00AM-9:50AM the English Language
Learners in the class will go with the ESL teacher
for extra support. The teacher may decide to
provide additional support to the ELL students.

During the first period of English

Language Arts from 9:00AM-9:50AM
the English Language Learners in the
class will go with the ESL teacher for
extra support. The teacher may
decide to provide additional support to
the ELL students.

2.
In our school we will assign 4 teachers for ELL support. The
school administrators and school board will conduct interviews
looking for the appropriate teachers. The candidates will not
necessarily have to be fluent in other languages, rather they will
need to possess the proper skills and strategies to efficiently
teach ELL students. These teachers will be given different
students to work with each period, and will be responsible for
monitoring and assessing the students progress. The teachers
will be asked to create a communication system with the regular
classroom teacher, in order to create common goals for the
student. With the left over funds from the fifth teacher, the
school will create a club that holds programs for ELL students.
This program will help students transition better into the English
language, and encourage parent involvement, although it is not
necessary.

3.
Depending upon what stage an ELL
student is in plays a factor in how many
students are assigned to each room. No
more than 3 ELL students per classroom
It is better to have two ELLs that way
they can work together and help each
other out. The students may even feel
more comfortable with a child who
speaks the same language as them.

Miss Peers first grade class has 1

ELL student
Miss Sobotkas kindergarten class
also has 1 ELL student
Miss Redicks third grade class has 2
ELL students. Miss Redick is
expecting another ELL student one of
these days.

4.
Parental involvement by the ELL students is not
very high at Grandview. All teachers are
determined for their ELL students parents to get
involved in the classroom, either in or outside of
the classroom.
Grandview holds a total of three mandatory
parent-teacher conferences; one at the beginning
of the year, one in the middle, and one at the end.
Every teacher is expected to send home a monthly
newsletter to the families stating what their child is
learning and important upcoming dates. Some of
the teachers use a blog that the parents can visit
on their own time.

The school's approach to instruction would be
English only. We chose this because it will
encourage our ELL students to learn the English
language. By having their surrounding
environment in English, the students will pick up
new vocabulary daily.
3 strategies used in our school's instruction are:
Direct instruction
Cooperative learning
Inquiry based learning

Instruction Methods
Direct Instruction-the use of straightforward, explicit teaching
techniques, usually to teach a specific skill. It is a teacher-directed
method, meaning that the teacher stands in front of a classroom and
presents the information
Cooperative Learning- a successful teaching strategy in which small
teams, each with students of different levels of ability, use a variety
of learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject.
Inquiry Based Learning- starts by posing questions, problems or
scenariosrather than simply presenting established facts or
portraying a smooth path to knowledge. The process is often assisted
by a facilitator.
