COUNT THE COST

BECOMING A DISCIPLE
LUKE 14:25-33

LUKE 14:25-33
Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them, "If
anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and
children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My
disciple. And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot
be My disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit
down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it-- lest,
after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it
begin to mock him, saying, 'This man began to build and was not able to
finish.' Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit
down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him
who comes against him with twenty thousand? Or else, while the other is
still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace.
So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My
disciple.(NKJV)

A. JESUS SPELLED OUT THE COST OF

DISCIPLESHIP

Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned

and said to them, "If anyone comes to Me and does
not hate his father and mother, wife and children,
brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he
cannot be My disciple. And whoever does not bear
his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.
(LUKE 14:25-27)

1. WHAT WERE THE CONDITIONS LAID DOWN BY

JESUS FOR A PERSON WHO WANTS TO BECOME
HIS DISCIPLE?

He should hate his father and mother, his

wife and children, his brothers and sisters,
even his own life.

He should carry his CROSS and FOLLOW

JESUS.

"IF ANYONE COMES TO ME AND DOES NOT HATE

HIS FATHER AND MOTHER, WIFE AND CHILDREN,
BROTHERS AND SISTERS, YES, AND HIS OWN
LIFE ALSO, HE CANNOT BE MY DISCIPLE.

It means we should love JESUS far more than

we love our family and ourselves.

There shouldnt be an area in our lives that

we wont allow Him to touch.

Jesus doesnt ask us for more than what He

gave. He endured all kinds of suffering while
on earth, and gave up His life for us on the
cross. So when he asks us to carry our
cross (v.27), He means that we should die
to ourselves and to the world, and live
with Him.

A. Somebody hurts us deeply. What used to

be our reaction and should be our reaction
now?

B. How do you spend your time? Why do you

do what you do? What are your motives?

B. COUNTING THE COST OF

BECOMING A DISCIPLE (V. 28-30)
1. To what did Jesus compare a man who wants to
be His disciple (v.28)?
A man who wants to build a tower first sits down to
estimate whether he has enough money to
complete it.

2. Why do you think Jesus gave the illustration of the

unfinished tower? Why do some who profess to be
believers fail to continue in their faith? Prepared to walk

Many people are attracted to Christ because they just want

to go to heaven. But they are not prepared to walk the way
of the cross. They decide hastily to follow Him and are
perhaps aware of some immediate costs, but have not
thought through the long term cost.

C. COUNTING THE COST OF

NOT BECOMING A DISCPLE
(V. 31-33)

1. a. In what dilemma was the king of the 10,000- strong army?

to fight or surrender
b. What did Jesus say was the only sensible decision for this king to make?
to surrender
c. Who do the two kings represent?
the king with the 10, 000 army represents us. The king with 20,000 army represents God.
