HOW DID THE PARALYMPIC GAMES


EMERGE?
The adapted Sport created for disabled started in
century XX;
First, it was just for deaf;
In 1920, started sports like swimming and
athleticism for visually impaired (blind);
For people with physical disabilities, the adapted
sport only started after the Second World War for
rehabilitation of soldiers who returned to their
homes maimed;
In 1948, Ludwig Guttmann, a German doctor,
organized the Stoke Mandeville Games, the first
games for the disabled.

MODERN GAMES
In 1960, the first edition of the Paralympic Games
occurred in the city of Rome;
Thiseventbrougthtogether400athletesfrom23

differentcontriestocompete;
Sincethen,theprofessionalizationofsports for
disabled people has started: it stopped being an
amateur sport to become a high level sport;
Thenumberofathletesparticipatinginthesega
mesincreasedsignificantly: more than 11
thousands athletes from more than 170 countries
in Rio 2016.

RIO 2016

The last edition of Paralympic games occurred in Rio


de Janeiro, Brazil;
Brazil finished with the best participation in the
Paralympic Games in History. There were 72 medals,
14 of them gold. You know what that meant? A
Brazilian rising on the podium every day;
The Brazilian soccer team of 5 has won its four-time
title - in fact, it is the only team that have won the
gold in the Paralympic Games, since it won in all
editions in which the sport was played;
Everyone was in love with the reception and the joy of
the Brazilians. The Opening Ceremony of the Rio 2016
Paralympics was aimed at encouraging the acceptance
of people with disabilities in society. It showed the lack
of accessibility in the world and charmed everyone.

CLASSIFICATION OF PARALYMPIC
ATHLETES IN EACH SPORTS

As the competitors have different disabilities, they


are evaluated by physicians and physiotherapists
and framed in classifications, depending on the
level of difficulty in performing the sport;

CLASSIFICATION IN ATHLETISM

11-13: visual impairment


20: intellectual disability
31-38: limited motor coordination
40-41: short person (midget)
42-44: deficiency in the lower limbs
45-47: deficiency in the upper limbs
51-57: wheelchairs
