What is this?
IDEA

504 Plan

It stands for Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

It is a law that requires schools to serve the educational


needs of eligible students with disabilities

This plan helps students with learning and attention issues within
the general curriculum

This plan provides support for specific needs that are met with
accommodations, modifications and other services within the
school

History and its


Development
IDEA

IDEA was originally enacted by Congress in 1975

The law has been revised many times!

Serves school-aged children, babies and toddlers


(added in 2006 and 2011)

504 Plan

Its a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination


based off the disability

The 504 applies to public elementary and


secondary school and among other entities

Key Elements

It ensures children with disabilities to receive a


free appropriate public education

Schools evaluate students suspected of having


disabilities along with learning disabilities

The 504 plan is enforced by the Department of


Educations Office of Civil Rights

Not EVERY child with learning and attention issues


qualifies for special education under the IDEA

It covers kids from infants-21 years old or high


school graduation

Children with disabilities MAY be eligible for


special education and related services under the
504

A child must have one of the 13 disabilities:


Autism, Deaf-blindness, Emotional Disturbance,
Hearing Impairment, Intellectual disability,
Multiple disabilities, orthopedic impairment, other
health impairments

It supports children education, it removes

Children who do not qualify for an IEP may qualify


for a 504 plan

The 504 defines a person with a disability as


someone who has a physical or mental
impairment, has a record of the impairment and is
regarded as having a temporary impairment
