Communications

Unit Data Highway (UDH)

Connects Controllers and HMIs
Ethernet Global Data (EGD)
Usually 2 UDHs for redundancy

Plant Data Highway (PDH)

Connects HMI server with Printers, HMI
Viewers
Usually Dual Networks for Redundancy

I/O Network (IO Net)

Communications between
controllers and IO Packs
> Controller to Controller
Communication (<R> to
<S> to <T>)
> Controller to/from IO
Packs
Single, Dual, and Triple
networks

Human Machine Interface (HMI)

Win2K or WinXP O/S
Cimplicity
2 Types Servers, and Viewers
Servers- Can configure Cimplicity Project
Servers- Provide Data to Viewers
Viewers- Only for control and monitoring
not configuration

Communications with DCS

Four types
> Serial Modbus
Slave from HMI
Server
> Modbus Slave
over TCP/IP
> GE Standard
Messaging (GSM)
over TCP/IP
> OPC

Designated Controller Determination

Weighted algorithm based
> Control State
> UDH Connectivity
> IONet Connectivity
> NVRAM health
If there is a numerical tie:
> R then S then T

UDH Communicator
Processor selected to send EGD data and
Alarm
Data over the UDH
All controllers receive EGD Data from the
UDH
In the event that a controller can not receive
UDH EGD Data, the controller will request the
data over the IONet from the UDH
communicator

Redundancy
4 different levels
Field Devices (Simplex, Dual, TMR)
Controllers (Simplex, Dual, TMR)
IO Network (Single, Dual, Triple)
IO Pack (Single, Dual, Triple)

Simplex Redundancy Options

example
Lowest Cost
No online repair
No redundancy
All IO is Single
Pack, Single
Network (SPSN)

Dual Redundancy Options example

More reliability
(simplex)
Online repair
limited by IO
redundancy
A- SPDN
B- 2SPSN
C- DPDN
D- TPDN

TMR Redundancy Options example

Most Reliable
Online repair
limited by IO
redundancy
A- SPDN
B- 2SPDN
C- DPDN
D- TPTN

Voting
Voting is separated into 2 different categories
> Inputs
> Outputs
Inputs voted in Software (SIFT)
> 2 out of 3 for logics
> Median Select for analogs
> Voting Disagreement Detector (Voter Mismatch)
