DESIGN APPROACH

CHECKLIST OF CONSIDERATION
Based on evolved hierarchies, a comprehensive checklist of
desirable design consideration was complied
Planning at the Township Level
Planning at the Sector Level
Planning at the Community/Street level
Planning at Dwelling level

PLANNING AT TOWNSHIP LEVEL

Provide a focus to the township
Achieve an overall cohesion of different areas and activities
Allow formation of environmental area by discouraging through

traffic
Incorporate all the basic community and institutional facilities
Place the community and central facility within the easy reach
Provide a well ordered hierarchy of roads
Provide a well ordered hierarchy of open spaces
Allow design population density to accommodate future growth
Adopt self- financing approach through cross- subsidy

PLANNING AT SECTOR LEVEL

Maintain context with land
Use natural features and landmarks construction and efficiency
Reflect the local, historical characterisation in the built form
Encourage interaction and integration amongst income/social group
Foster viable community in each sector
Provide a sense of boundary to each sector
Provide well distributed open spaces for various activities
Provide a defined entry points and discourage through vehicular

traffic

PLANNING AT COMMUNITY/STREET
LEVEL
Promote person to person contact through cluster of human scale
Provide a individual character to each cluster
Create functionally sympathetic and aesthetically pleasing street

environment
Provide spaces for social and religious activities
Promote income generation at cluster level
Provide all essential amenities and utilities to every street
Have regards for pedestrian

DESIGN
PROGRAMME

PLANNING AT THE DWELLING LEVEL

Make the dwelling sensitive to the lifestyle and daily needs of the

people
Give each dwelling a rich, unique identity
Consider orientation, light, cross ventilation for natural climate
control
Study the efficiency of plot sizes, walls, foundation and internal
circulation
Use appropriate materials and construction methods
Make the dwelling simple and economic to encourage the self-built
approach

STAGES OF EVOLUTION
Plan initially prepared by Indore
Development Authority which
shows a typical rubber stamping
attitude without any concern for
open spaces hierarchy, circulation
system, climatic orientation or the
builtform.
Intial stage of proposed plan with
distributed open spaces and street
hierarchies
Later stage of development with
rectified orientation to minimise
heat gain and increase natural
shading
Proposed master plan

HIERARCHY AND DISTRIBUTION OF

AMENITIES

DISTRIBUTION OF INCOME GROUPS

CIRCULATION NETWORK

CIRCULATION NETWORK
Vehicular access in the form of rectilinear and formal roads in the

hierarchy of 4.5m wide to 15m wide road draw vehicles outwardly

Pedestrian access in the form of informal interlinked open spaces
draws people inwardly
This achieves a clear and safe segregation of vehicular and
pedestrian movement
