Reviewing Poetry Terms


Sound Devices:
Alliteration: Repetition of initial consonant sounds of
words in close proximity in a poem
Assonance: Repetition of internal vowel sounds of words in
close proximity within a poem
Consonance: Repetition if internal or ending consonant
sounds of words in close proximity within a poem
Rhyme: half/slant- consonance , slight- looks like they should
rhyme, perfect- assonance + consonance
End-stopped line: punctuation
Enjambment: no punctuation

Examples
Alliteration- Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled
peppers.
Assonance- I made my way to the lake.
Consonance- I dropped the locket in the thick mud.
Perfect Rhyme- cat hat
Half/Slant Rhyme- Main man
Slight Rhyme- bear, dear

Types of poems
Sonnet- 14 lines, iambic pentameter, thematic organization

Shakespearean Sonnet- ABAB CDCD EFEF GG


4 stanzas, 3 quatrains 1 couplet- conclusion/refutation/amplification

Free verse: Poetry without a defined form, meter, or rhyme scheme


Villanelle: A highly structure poetic for that comprises six stanza,
five tercets and a quatrain. The poem repeats the first and third lines
throughout.
