Manufacturing Technology-II

9M402.1

Recap
In previous semester, we studied various
manufacturing processes in MT-I subject
Name few of them
Turning ,shaping, drilling and boring etc.
In continuation of the topic, in this semester, we are
going to study few more manufacturing methods and
machine tools.

9M402.1

Milling and Gear- Making

9M402.1

Objectives
On completion of this period, you would be able to
Define the basic milling operation
Differentiate milling from turning and shaping
Know the working principle of milling machine

9M402.1

Milling
It is a machining operation in which the work is fed
against a revolving cutting tool
The cutting tools is referred as cutter
A cutter consists of multiple cutting edges over its
periphery

9M402.1

Turning

It is a machining method in which a single point

cutting tool is fed against a revolving work, the work
being held in a chuck.
Only cylindrical objects are handled

9M402.1

Shaping
It is a machining method in which a clamped work is
fed against a reciprocating single-point cutting tool
Only flat surfaces are generated
Low speed of operation

10

Milling - Features
Milling cutter revolves at a high speed having multiple
cutting edges
Cutter is held on an arbor, which is mounted on
bearing support so that vibrations are absorbed
Work is clamped to the table rigidly

9M402.1

11

Relative Merits Contd.

Removes metal at a fast rate

Fine surface finish
Closer dimensional accuracy

9M402.1

12

Relative Merits Contd.

Can handle both cylindrical and flat work pieces
Can cut gears also
Operation is more dynamically balanced
Can also machine complex contours

15

Working Principle
Clamped work is fed against a revolving cutter from one
end
Table is adjusted vertically for depth of cut
Cutter is a drum or disc type with cutting edges evenly
distributed on its periphery

9M402.1

16

Working Principle
Table can be fed in longitudinal, cross and vertical
directions
Table can be swiveled in horizontal or vertical planes
Metal is removed in the form of small sized chips
Cutter revolves in one direction only while the work can be
fed from both ends
