Clinical Manifestation
The clinical spectrum of influenza A (H5N1) in
human base on description of hospitalized
patients
Incubation period may be longer than human
influenza 2-4 days, upper limit 8-17 days
History of contact with poultry:
Visited a poultry farm
A household raising poultry; or a bird market
Contact with a known or suspect human case of
imfluenza A (H5N1) in an H5N1-infected area within
10 days of symptom onset
Temperature of >38 C
Influenze like illness with lower respiratory
symptoms
Dry Cough
Sore throat
Nasal congestion/ rhinorrhea
Shortness of breath
Sneezing
Headache
Body aches/myalgia
Fatigue
Irritated eyes
Acute Respiratory Distress syndrome (ARDS)
Tachypnea
Diarrhea without blood
Abdominal pain
Temperature of >38 C
Influenze like illness with lower respiratory
symptoms
Dry Cough
Sore throat
Nasal congestion/ rhinorrhea

Sneezing
Headache
Body aches/myalgia

Management
Most hospitalized patients requires ventilatory
support
Broad spectrum antibiotics
Antiviral agents corticosteroids
Adamtane group:
Amantadine
Rimantadine
Neuromidase inhibitors
Oseltamivir, 2 x 75 mg/daily for 5 days within 36-48 hours
after the onset of illness
Inhaled zanamivir
Complication
Multiorgan failure
Renal dysfunction
Cardiac dilatation
Supraventricular tachyarrhythmias
Pneumonia
Pulmonary hemorrhage
Pnemothorax
Pancytopenia
Reyes syndrome
Sepsis
