Language Arts is defined...


in elementary teaching as listening, speaking, reading and writing
also include language conventions : spelling, punctuation, grammar
usage and handwriting.
Computer usage and skills (word processing, online research and
communication in electronic discourse communities are part of the
language arts as well.
Goal : to achieve literacy for all children

The national Standards for the English Language Arts


(1996), written jointly by the International Reading
Association (IRA) and The National Council of Teachers
of English (NCTE) , recognized the 4 language arts did
not acknowledge the powerful role of nonprint media
in children' lives.

The complex, recursive process through which


we make meaning from the texts.
The use of a writing system or orthography by people
in the conduct of their daily lives to communicate over
time and space.
Attending to communication by any means: includes
listening to speech, watching signing,r using
communication aids.
The act of communication through such means as
vocalization, sigining or using communication aids like
voice synthesizers.
Attending to communication conveyed by visually
representing.
Conveying information or expressing oneself using
nonverbal visual means such as drawing, computer
graphics (maps, charts, artwork), photography or
physical performance.

Values of Language Arts


Form the foundation for all effective communication.
Establish an individuals ability to comprehend, construct and
communicate meaning through critical reading, thinking,
writing and speaking, in many different forms.

Help students control their lives by becoming more


effective thinkers.
Students become engaged as active learners to develop
good thinking strategies.
They need to practice language skills and receive frequent
quality feedback across all areas of study in order to improve.

Values of Language Arts


Found pleasure and satisfaction in reading and writing
They will be readers and writers, individuals who admire their
piece of work or the written text that they have read.

Understand and make sense of the world


They will use language to understand themselves and others
and make sense of the world. As a mean of reflecting on their
lives, they will engage in such activities as telling and hearing
stories, reading novels and poetry, and keeping journals.

Learn about the cultures


Students learn about their own and other cultures through
reading culturally relevant literature in English.
