WHAT IS POLLUTION?
Pollution is contamination of our surrounding
.Pollution directly or indirectly harms
human beings and organisms.
Pollution is often described as ‘unfavourable
alteration’ of the surrounding
WHAT GETS POLLUTED
• The air we breath the water we drink and the soil
in which we grow our vegetables and crops can
get altered unfavouably due to the addition of
certain substances or forms of energy Radiation
and noises are forms of energy and when they
exceed certain limits they too can pollute the
environment. For Example, playing very loud
music amounts to sound pollution. Due to
various reasons air,water,soil gets polluted.
Types of Pollution
• Air Pollution
• Water Pollution
• Noise Pollution
Air Pollution

• Air pollution is the introduction of chemicals,

particulate matter, or biological materials that
cause harm or discomfort to humans or other
living organisms, or damages the
natural environment, into the atmosphere.
• The atmosphere is a complex, dynamic natural
gaseous system that is essential to support life
on planet Earth. Stratospheric ozone depletion
due to air pollution has long been recognized as
a threat to human health as well as to the
Earth's ecosystems.
Noise pollution

Noise health effects are both health and behavioural in

nature. The unwanted sound is called noise. This
unwanted sound can damage physiological and
psychological health. Noise pollution can cause annoyance
and aggression, hypertension, high stress levels, tinnitus,
hearing loss, sleep disturbances, and other harmful
effects. Furthermore, stress and hypertension are the
leading causes to health problems, whereas tinnitus can
lead to forgetfulness, severe depression and at times panic
attacks.
Water Pollution

Millions depend on the polluted Ganges river.

Water pollution is a major problem in the global context.
It has been suggested that it is the leading worldwide
cause of deaths and diseases, and that it accounts for
the deaths of more than 14,000 people daily. An
estimated 700 million Indians have no access to a
proper toilet, and 1,000 Indian children die of diarrheal
sickness every day. Water is typically referred to as
polluted when it is impaired by anthropogenic
contaminants and either does not support a human
use, like serving as drinking water. Natural phenomena
such as volcanoes, algae blooms, storms, and
earthquakes also cause major changes in water quality
and the ecological status of water.
