Ability of analyze and evaluate beam and shaft deflection
problems and energy method under various types of loading
CO3:
Ability to analyze and evaluate buckling and thin plate
bending problems
CO4:
Ability to apply and assess fracture mechanics, fatique and
creep problems

Topics covered
1. Chapter 8 : Combined loading
2. Chapter 12 : Deflections of Beams and
3.

6.

Shafts
Chapter 14 :Energy Methods
Chapter 13: Buckling of Columns
Chapter 6: Bending of thin plates
Fracture Mechanics, Fatigue and Creep
Problems - Not in text book

What is combined loading?

Determine stresses developed in thinwalled pressure vessels

Determine stresses developed in a
members cross section when axial load,
torsion, bending and shear occur
simultaneously.

Chapter 14: Energy Methods

Formulate the strain energy stored in a

member, when it is subjected to an axial
load, bending moment, transverse shear
or torsional moment.
Apply the principle of conservation of
energy to determine the stress and
deflection of a member when it is
subjected to impact.

Chapter 12: Deflections of Beams

and Shafts

Determine the deflection and slope at specific points

on beams and shafts, using various analytical
methods including:

The integration method

The use of discontinuity functions

The method of superposition

Determine the same, using a semi-graphical
technique, called the moment-area method

Chapter 13: Buckling of

Columns

Understand the behavior of columns and

concept of critical load and buckling
Determine the axial load needed to
buckle a so-called ideal column
Determine the effective length of a
column with various end-conditions
Design a realistic column against
buckling

Bending of thin plates

Determine the internal moment at a

section of a beam
Determine the stress in a beam member
caused by bending

Fracture Mechanics, Fatigue and

Creep Problems
Investigation of linear elastic and elastic-plastic
fracture mechanics. Topics include microstructural
effects on fracture in metals, ceramics, polymers,
thin films, biological materials and composites,
toughening mechanisms, crack growth resistance
and creep fracture. Also covered: interface fracture
mechanics, fatigue damage and dislocation
substructures in single crystals, stress- and strainlife approach to fatigue, fatigue crack growth
models and mechanisms, variable amplitude
fatigue, corrosion fatigue and case studies of
fracture and fatigue in structural, bioimplant, and
microelectronic components.

Project
Get into group of 5 as per EAC requirements
Analyze the cases about
1. Chapter 8 : Combined loading
2. Chapter 12 : Deflections of Beams and Shafts
3. Chapter 14 :Energy Methods
4. Chapter 13: Buckling of Columns
5. Chapter 6: Bending of thin plates
6. Fracture Mechanics, Fatigue and Creep Problems
