Facilitating Youth Learning in Informal
and Formal Environments (INST 650):
Learn how to facilitate youth learning with an
introduction to the foundational concepts in YX
programs and services, including principles in
working with youth and children; basic theories
and frameworks to inquiry, resources, and
services related to the information needs and
interests of youth and children.

Promoting Rich Learning with
Technology (INST 651):
Discover how children and teens learn, types
of learning that can happen with technology,
and integration of technologies to facilitate
rich learning experiences.

Design Thinking and Youth (INST 652):
Learn how to design effective learning
environments inside and outside of libraries
that take the children/teens needs into
consideration by involving them in the design
of the programming and services, using
youth-driven methods, participatory design
techniques, and design thinking stages.

Capstone Course in Youth Experience:
Leverage existing community partnerships or
build new partnerships that will allow students
to put into practice all the skills that they
have learned in the first three courses.
Students will plan, develop, and implement a
technology-infused library program as the
culmination of the course and the certification
program.

Dr. Mega Subramaniam, Associate Professor
Dr. Subramaniam conducts research on the use of school and
public libraries as effective hybrid spaces to encourage
science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)
interest among underserved, underrepresented and
disadvantaged young adults.

All applicants must have:
Received a four-year baccalaureate degree;
Received a master's degree in library or
information science;
Earned a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0
scale) in all prior undergraduate and graduate
course work;
Must currently be a public librarian working
with children and teens; and
Certificate must be pertinent to current
position.

$1200.80. There is also a $75 application fee (this fee is waived if you are a
graduate of UMD).
