environment using tested skills and
practices for different types of youth.
Utilize methods for engaging youth as codesigners using the design thinking
process.
Demonstrate an understanding of the
issues, concepts, and policies related to
youth-led learning and programming
through libraries.

Course and Activities

Between May 2017 and May 2018, students will complete:
Orientation and HCIL Symposium Students will participate in
an in person orientation to the YX Certificate and attend the
Human Computer Interaction Lab Symposium
Coursework Students will complete four courses in
sequential order (as a cohort). All enrolled students will take
the courses together and in the same sequence;
A community engagement projectThe Capstone course (the
4th course) in which each student will plan, develop, and
implement a technology-infused library program that involves
partnership with community partner(s) at their library using
knowledge gained through the previous three courses; and
Scholarshipthroughout the program, students will publish
vignettes and/or scholarly articles in blogs, journals, online
portfolio, present at your local/virtual conferences, etc.
Participate in pre and post program virtual interviews, and pre
and post certificate assessments.

Orientation and HCIL

Symposium
As a member of the first YX Cohort,
librarians will come to College Park, MD for
an orientation to the YX Certificate and to
attend the nationally recognized Human
Computer Interaction Lab (HCIL)
Symposium. At the HCIL Symposium,
librarians will learn about the latest research
on design thinking, technology and learning,
and usability, among other topics.

Facilitating Youth Learning in Informal
and Formal Environments (INST 650):
Learn how to facilitate youth learning with an
introduction to the foundational concepts in YX
programs and services, including principles in
working with youth and children; basic theories
and frameworks to inquiry, resources, and
services related to the information needs and
interests of youth and children.

Discover how children and teens learn, types
of learning that can happen with technology,
and integration of technologies to facilitate

Learn how to design effective learning
environments inside and outside of libraries
that take the children/teens needs into

techniques, and design thinking stages.

Capstone Course in Youth Experience:
Leverage existing community partnerships or
build new partnerships that will allow students
to put into practice all the skills that they
have learned in the first three courses.
Students will plan, develop, and implement a

culmination of the course and the certification

Dr. Mega Subramaniam, Associate Professor
Dr. Subramaniam conducts research on the use of school and
public libraries as effective hybrid spaces to encourage
science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)
interest among underserved, underrepresented and
disadvantaged young adults.

Dr. Tamara Clegg, Assistant Professor

Dr. Cleggs research focuses on developing life-relevant
learning environments and supporting technologies for
enabling children to engage in science in the context of
achieving goals relevant to their lives.

Ms. Linda Braun

Ms. Braun is a widely recognized library and learning
consultant with expertise in developing and assessing
creative learning opportunities in informal and formal
environments.

Received a four-year baccalaureate degree;
Received a master's degree in library or
information science;
Earned a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0
scale) in all prior undergraduate and graduate
course work;
Must currently be a public librarian working
with children and teens; and
Certificate must be pertinent to current
position.

Through the generous support of the Institute of Museum and

Library Services (IMLS), tuition for accepted students for the
2017-18 cohort will be defrayed by $1975 per course. The
University of Maryland currently charges $2275.20 per
course. Cost breakdowns per course are as follows:
