IMPORTANCE OF LIGHT
Light is a basic ingredient for
living and working as
It is because of light that
anything can be seen
It is in lighted conditions
that any work can be done
Besides the physical need
of light, there is the
psychological and
emotional need of light for

IMPORTANCE
IN ARCHITECTURE GLAZING FROM THE
OPPO. WALL

Light is one of the basic concerns in

architecture as architecture, ultimately, is
organization of spaces for some human
activity and no activity can be performed
without light.
Architects, thus, have to be very careful
to ensure that their designs give
appropriate importance to this aspect.
Every habitable space needs to be lit

WHAT IS LIGHT
Light or visible light is
electromagnetic radiation that is
visible to the human eye, and is
responsible for the sense of
sight.

sun.
The sun is emitting energy in which is the
energy of light and heat.
While daylight in a sun lit space comprises
only the light from the sun, light inside
buildings is made up of the additional
reflected light.
The daylight that enters a room is composed
of three elements. Direct light from the sky,
externally reflected light from surrounding
buildings and other obstructions and
internally reflected light. (Direct sunlight is

It is noticed that daylight is present

even when there is no sunlight like
the North side where the sun is not
positioned, summer or winter as
indicated by the sun path diagrams.
The indirect light source can then be
presumed to be a sky dome that is
emitting light as reflected light
received from the sun.
The quantity of light will thus be

CONTRAST
sharp contrast with deep shadows can be
dramatic or annoying, depending upon the
situation. for everyday living, it is important
that ambient, accent, and task lighting are
compatible.
all environments benefit from contrast in
lighting. it brings out natural textural
elements, it pleases the eye by providing a
realistic sense of three dimensions, and it
makes moving form one area to another
safer. a good design integrates contrasting
light levels plus the pleasant arrangement of
changes in colors and textures.
while shadows from contrasting light levels
and light offer a sense of shape and depth,
deep shadows call for eyes to make difficult
adjustments and can be hazardous
especially outside at night
