anyone else

Equality in America has traditionally meant equality

of opportunity:
Everyone has an equal chance for success,
regardless of wealth family, race or religion

AMERICAN SOCIETY
It is considered fundamental to the American spirit
It is an important civic and social goal
It shapes Americans attitudes and behaviors:
*All people are treated equally
There are not status differences in society,
between superior and inferior

Ex1:
At university, instructors often ask their students to call
them by their first name, and even feel uncomfortable if
they are called by the title Professor, Dr., Mr., or
Mrs.

Ex2:
In the workplace, co-workers treat each other with
politeness and respect, regardless of their status.
Good
morning!

Good
morning!

Boss & secretary

* All people, even service people are treated with respect:

Ex:
When dinning out, Americans treat waiters as equal to
themselves
-> They request: Could I have some water?
Not say: I want some water

The American value of equality in sayings:

One man, one vote.

Line up, and wait your turn.
First come, first served.
