CHAPTER 2

Introduction to Dobby
Shedding
SURAYA AHMAD SUHAIMI

Mechanism
Positive dobby
the dobby machine both raises and lowers
the shafts

Negative dobby
shafts are raised by the dobby and lowered
by some form of spring undermotion
simpler and satisfactory except for heavy
fabrics and high loom speed
common than positive dobby except for
woolen and worsted

Negative Dobby
Shedding
Derived from the original Keighley
Dobby
Most of its motion occur at half the
loom speed due to its cycle that
occupies two picks thus make it able
to operates at relatively high speeds.

The basic components of

Keighley dobby

Stop bars
Baulk
Hooks (two per heald)
Knives (two for the entire dobby)
Pegs on pattern chain

The motion of reciprocating

knives (K1and K2) originates
from the bottom shaft of

Open shed formation in

Keighley dobby

When the heald is in lower position for two picks, the

top and bottom end of the baulk will be resting on the
stop bars (S1and S2).

So, the midpoint of the baulk will not have any

significant movement.
If the heald is in raised position for two picks, then one
end of the baulk will move away from the stop bar and
another end of the baulk will move towards the stop
bar.

Keighley Dobby
No wasted movement a shaft moves only
when it is required to do so.
Double acting - its cycle occupies two picks
It used pegs on the lags
Spring undermotion used for return
movement of heald shafts

The action of Keighley

Dobby

Keighley dobby (double lift)

Principle
1. lags present pegs to feelers
2. feelers control vertical rods
3. vertical rods control hooks, one at a time (every
pick)
4. knives operated from loom shaft will try to catch the
hooks
5. active knife pull the hook if gets caught (drop by
vertical rod); otherwise leave the hook
6. hook pulled by the knife will raise the heald frame.

Pegging the lags

Each lag serves for two picks
The holes in the lags are staggered to
correspond with the position of feelers
Pattern barrel is turned alternatingly to
present new lag for every second pick
The selection for heald movement is
controlled by wooden pegs which can be
inserted within the circular holes made
on the wooden lags.

System of
pegging
- The presence of a
peg within the hole
will raise the heald
shaft and vice versa.

Dobby spring
undermotion
Negative dobby raises the shafts but
cannot lower them
Therefore we need spring
undermotions
Simplest system fix the springs near
the floor. The simplest has been
widely used for lightweight fabric.

Dobby Knives and Hook

Motion
The action begin, of course from
where it is driven.
Keighley dobby actuates its knives
from a crank mounted on the end of
the bottom shaft.
Modern dobby actuates the knives
from cam mounted on a shaft in the
dobby.

Positive Dobby Shedding

The obvious alteration on dobby
mechanism to achieve positive term
is by eliminates the spring under
motion yet they managed to
overcome the floating baulk.
Understand the Knowles dobby to
understand why it differ from positive
dobby shedding. Is Knowles positive
or negative?
