ASSIGNMENT 3

Compare and contrast high rise buildings with low

rise buildings. Mention advantages and
disadvantages of both.
High-Rise
Offers amenities such as pool, gym, playground, lobby
May offer service/utilities such as a convenience store and laundry shop (may
be located nearby or within the building)
Will have different unit layout types available
Located closer to the city or in the city itself
Offers a parking garage
Adequate security and maintenance Nice view from higher floors
Low-Rise
Nearer to the street
Less elevator time
Often built in residential areas
Offers more privacy
Outdoor space
Owning pets would be more convenient
Cheaper than high-rise, prices are often negotiable

High-Rise
More expensive
Exposed to noise pollution since it is typically located in
the busy parts of the city
No private outdoor space
Less privacy
More exposure to pollution
Units are closer to each other so noisy neighbors can be
a bother
Low-Rise
Fewer amenities
May or may not offer parking space
Less luxurious than high-rise
Usually unfurnished
Far from the city where occupants might work
Might not have elevators because of fewer floors
Taking the elevator may take a bit more time especially
at certain times
You might have to set up your own phone, internet, and
cable

Qstn. Elaborate on the role of wind load in high rise buildings.

WIND LOAD: The wind loading is the most important factor that determines
the design of tall buildings over 10 storeys, where storey
height approximately lies between 2.7 3.0 m.
Buildings of up to 10 storeys, designed for gravity loading can
accommodate wind loading without any additional steel for
lateral system.
Wind loading on a tall building (more than 10 storeyed)acts
over a very large building surface, with greater intensity at
the greater heights and with a larger moment arm about the
base. So, the additional steel required for wind resistance
increases non-linearly with height.
Prediction of wind loading in precise scientific terms may not
be possible, as it is influenced by many factors such as the
form of terrain, the shape, slenderness, the solidarity ratio of
building and the arrangement of adjacent buildings.
The appropriate design wind loads are estimated based on
two approaches.
Static approach is one, which assumes the building to be a
