Omega-3 Fats Fight Heart
Disease
 They help to decrease stickiness of platelets,
the blood’s clotting cells.
 They tend to decrease blood pressure.
 They tend to decrease serum triglycerides.
 If a heart attack does occur, they may
decrease muscular damage resulting from the
attack.
 They appear to decrease the likelihood of
blood vessels blocking up again after
angioplasty or bypass surgery.

Problems with Fish and Fish Oil
 Can worsen blood sugar levels in diabetics.
 Large amounts can dangerously prolong the
blood clotting time.
 Fish oil is expensive
 Large amounts cause vitamin overloading or
vitamin deficiency
 Sea food is a large reservoir for infectious
diseases
 Toxins acquired from contaminated waters
concentrate in the fatty tissues of fish.

Fish Contamination Compounds

 Fish from mildly polluted water concentrate

toxins up to more than 1,000,000 times more
than detected in water.
 Toxin in their fatty tissues include pesticides,
chlorinated hydrocarbons, mercury, and dioxin.
 Fish can also be contaminated with PCBs,
various heavy metals, petroleum hydrocarbons,
halogenated organic compounds and lead.
Evidence Linking Fish
Contamination to Cancer
 Elevated levels of pesticide compounds
have been found in the tissue of breast
cancer patients.
 National Cancer Institute data show an increased death
rate from cancer among people living in areas where
fish have exceptionally large amounts of tumors.
Evidence Linking Fish
Contamination to Cancer
 Fish have more cancer now than 50 years ago.
Example: 30 percent of the bullheads in Lake
Erie were found with liver cancer.
PCB and the Reproductive System
 The major ongoing source of PCB exposure for
the general population is the consumption of
fish.
 PCB may affect male sperm counts and
fertility.
 PCB-contaminated fish eaten by pregnant
mothers are linked to alterations in birth size,
gestational age, and changes in neonatal health
status.
PCB and the Reproductive System

 Children at 11 years of age with higher

exposures to PCB before birth show
impaired intellectual development.
