– Louis grew up in New Orleans, the city known as the
birth place of jazz. – He first started playing the trumpet at age 7 – When he got older he started bringing his music to the streets. Him and his friends formed a quartet and they would play on the street corners. As people would pass by they would stop and listen and most would drop money in the hat they had put out. – He played in anything that had to do with the birth of jazz. For example he played in the holiday parade, in bars, nighttime cruises, and other places like that. – That was just the beginning...there was a lot more in store for him…. He Played in a variety of bands…. • One of the first bands he played in was Fate Marable’s Band 1918 in St. Louis ; others included: – Kid Ory’s Band – 1919 to 1921 – Zutty Singleton’s Band – 1922 to 1925 – Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band - – And many other bands too. • He also got a chance to play with Fletcher Henderson’s Orchestra, which he played in for 13 long months. Louis first Album:
• He made his first
recordings on November 12, 1925 with his group The Hot Five • Some of the songs on the record were: – A Monday Date – Basin Street Blues – Come Back Sweet Papa Louis Armstrong Louis was no ordinary musician, he had a since of style that he made his own. He was a very creative person, that is one of the things that made him such a fantastic player. Jazz music just came so naturally to him. Louis started out young and as he got older his skills improved greatly. Growing up he had many mentors along the way one of them being King Oliver; another one of jazzes great creations. King is the one that helped make him the protégé that he is today. And though Louis Armstrong is deceased his music still lives on. Why I Chose This Topic…….. • I chose to research about Louis Armstrong because he is one of my favorite Jazz players. His music is an inspiration to me and to many others. While researching about him I learned a lot about him that I didn't know before. One of the many things I learned about is that he played in the orchestra and he was in many bands. His music I believed shared a message that could be interpreted in many ways. I, like many other people, love his music and enjoy listening to it. His music helps me to just kick back and relax. I would recommend anybody who has never listened to his music to take a risk and listen to it because they just might enjoy it….like me!
