AMERICA EDUCATION SYSTEM

1. Public school and private school:

In the United States, state and local government
have primary responsibility for education.
Public school systems are supported by a
combination of local, state, and federal government
funding (87%).
Private schools in the United States include
parochial schools (affiliated with religious
denominations), non-profit independent schools, and
for-profit private schools (10%).

2. School time
Primary and secondary school
Most students study about 6 hours/ day, about
175 to 185 days/ year.
Summer holidays is from June to August (2.5
months).

2. School time
Higher school (College and University)
Many schools split the academic year into two
semesters
The others school systems applied three
semesters a year (semesters of four months).
Others schools split the academic year into four
semester system (optional summer courses).
AMERICA EDUCATION SYSTEM
Education is compulsory over an age range
starting between 5 and 8 and ending somewhere
between ages 16 and 18, depending on the state.
In most schools, education is divided into three
levels:
Elementary school: from 5 11 years old.
Middle or junior high school: 11 14 years old.
High school: from 14 18 years old.

EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS

The goal of the American education system is to

teach children how to learn and to help them reach
their maximum potential.
The development of social and interpersonal skills
may be considered as important as the
development of intellectual skills.
AMERICA EDUCATION SYSTEM

EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS

Unlike the situation in many other countries,

traditionally, local community school districts have
had responsibility for determining school curricula
and selecting textbooks, with only limited state and
national supervision.
AMERICA EDUCATION SYSTEM
EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS
Both the state and the federal government
have become more involved in determining
school standards. The federal government
has set national goals for education that
include standards for early childhood,
elementary, secondary, and adult education.
Even teacher education programs have to
meet federal and state standards.
AMERICA EDUCATION SYSTEM
EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS
In the early 2000s, the federal government
began a program called No Child Left Behind
(NCLB), with the goal of holding schools and
teachers accountable for student progress.
Under the No Child Left Behind program, all
American states must test students in public
schools statewide to ensure that they are
achieving the desired level of minimum
education; students being educated at home or
in private schools are not included.
AMERICA EDUCATION SYSTEM
EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS
During high school, students (usually in 11th grade)
may take one or more standardized tests depending
on their post-secondary education preferences and
their local graduation requirements. In theory, these
tests evaluate the overall level of knowledge and
learning aptitude of the students. The SAT and ACT
are the most common standardized tests that students
take when applying to college. A student may take the
SAT, ACT, or both depending upon the post-secondary
institutions the student plans to apply to for admission.

STATE DIFFERENCE

United State does not have a national system of education.

Education is considered to be a matter for people of each state. The

main function of Department of Education is to give advise and
finance supports.

Local governments actually determine educational policy.

Each school district is administered and financed by the community

along with that district's state government.
AMERICA EDUCATION SYSTEM

STATE DIFFERENCE

Each states different educational curriculum is based on the

accessibility, autonomy and diversity of a state

American universities have similar organizational structures

but each institution runs differently according to its
resources and strategic priorities.
AMERICA EDUCATION SYSTEM

STATE DIFFERENCE

The federal laws most impact on education:

Equal access to education.

Safeguarding students and techers constitutional rights

(e.g., No Child Left Behind Act and Race to the Top).

The federal government also influences education by

allocating funding only to those school districts that follow
certain federal guidelines.
EXAMPLE

In New Hampshire more than 80% of costs was paid by local funds. While
in California , more than 85% of cost was paid by the state fund.

Most of the states develop new standards for education programs for
mathematics and English language arts that different than the one generally
and originally set. Only Alaska, Minnesota, Nebraska, Texas, and Virginia
have remained the original.

Difference in teacher salary:

South Dakota : ~ 18,100 USD per year
California, Michigan, Rhode Island : ~ 30,000 USD per year
Alaska : ~ 41,500 USD per year
