3 PARABOLA
Definition : A parabola is the set of all points in a plane equidistant
from a fixed point , F ( Focus ) and a fixed straight line ( called
directrix ) in the plane .

F Focus
Fixed straight line Directrix
Axis A line through the focus perpendicular to the directrix
V Vertex , the point on the axis halfway between directrix
and focus
Equation of a parabola with vertex V(0,0)
1 ) The axis is at x-axis
(a) y2 = 4ax , x >0
( b) y2 = 4ax ,a < 0
2 ) The axis is at y - axis
(a)
x = 4ay , a>0
2 X2 = 4ay , a <0
Equation of a parabola with vertex V (h , k)

(y-k )2 = 4a ( x-h ) , a > 0

(y-k )2 = 4a ( x-h ) , a < 0
(x-h )2 = 4a ( y-k ) , a > 0
(x-h )2 = 4a ( y-k ) , a < 0
Example :
Find the equation of the parabola in standard form that satisfies the given
condition :
V (3,3) , F (-3 , 3)
Solution
(y-k )2 = 4a ( x h )
(y 3 )2 = 4a ( x 3 ) h + a = -3
a = -3 h
a = -3 -3
a = -6
Answer : ( y 3 )2 = -12 (x 3 )
