Dissolved Oxygen Overview

The DO determine measure the amount of dissolved oxygen present in water

or wastewater.
Aerobic bacteria and aquatic life such as fish must have DO to survive.
Wastewater lagoons or ponds, trickling filters and activated sludge plants depend
on these aerobic bacteria to treat sewage.

Whats an Oxygen Meter ?

The Equipment that measure dissolved oxygen in solution, consists of
the sensor or probe and the meter
Basically of work is the sensor reacts with oxygen and an electrical signal
is produced in proportional to the oxygen concentration.
Dissolved Oxygen Overview

How DO sensor work :

Sensor operate as electro-chemical cells with positive electrode (cathode) and
negative electrode (anode) connected by a salt bridge consisting of a saturated
electrolyte solution

Oxygen passes through a permeable membrane and is chemically reduced within

The sensor, the chemical reduction by oxygen generates an electrical current that
Is processed by electronic components within the meter and displayed as

Dissolved Oxygen concentration

Oxygen diffusing into the sensor tip binds to the fluorescent dye, which
reduces (quenches) the intensity of light emission. The quenching is directly
related to oxygen concentration

1 potential free alarm contacts
2 potential free-contacts programmable as limit or PID control
2 signal o/p for measured values or as continuous control o/p
Automatic calibration procedure

For sampling system, sample should be conditioning as :

1. Flow rate : 4 ~ 15 l/h
2. Temperature up to 50 deg Celsius
3. Inlet pressure : up to 1 bar for M Flow type
Flow cell 0.5 ~ 10 bar with sample pressure

Dissolved Oxygen Overview

How does temperature affect the DO reading :

Temperature affects DO reading in 2 ways :

1. It changes the permeability of the membrane. As the temperature increases so
does the permeability of the membrane. As the temperature decreases the
oxygen permeability through membrane decreases
2. Temperature affects the amount of oxygen that can be dissolved in water. As
the temperature increases the oxygen saturation point of water decreases.
