VARIETY OF GIRLS ON
CAMPUS
The trendy veil is the new form of a trendy and
friendly image of Islam in Indonesia

No consensus about the right way of dressing

Four groups:
- Wearing a cadar
- Wearing long veils and usually long skirts
- Wearing trendy veils combined with, for example,
jeans
- Not wearing the veil
GIRLS WEARING A
CADAR
- 1% of the students of UGM
- Korean studies (Salafi)
Muhammed, his companions and the two succeeding
generations should be seen as references as to how Islam
should be practiced
- Can choose to stop attending at any time
- Not attract the attention of men
- Not interact with boys, not hang out after class, not listen
to music, not watch tv and not listen to the radio

Its dangerous that everyone interprets the Koran in his

or her own way; Islam is no longer pure
OPINIONS
- Not yet accepted in Indonesian society
- Odd and strange
- Conflicting with local traditions
- Associated with terrorism
DISCUSSION
How do you feel about girls wearing cadar and the interpret
of the Koran this closely?
GIRLS WEARING LONG
VEILS, LONG SKIRTS AND
SOCKS
- Fashionable within the limits
- Most of the time members of this group are activists of
KAMMI (Kesatuan Aksi Mahasiswa Muslim Indonesia)
- Veil is according to the Koran and Sunna correct
- Religious obligation to cover not only the hair but also the
shape of the body as well as her feet
- Does not shake hands with boys, only interact with them if
she has to, avoid eye-contact with a boy, not go out at
night, no media consumption, not listen to Western music,
selective TV consumption

The new forms of short veils give Islam a bad image

OPINIONS
- Not really accepted as they are seens as too exclusive
(like not wanting to shake hands with boys)
- Too fanatic
- Arrogant
DISCUSSION
Do you think that people wearing long veil are too fanatic?

Boys normally treat her with more respect than they treat
other girls

Do you, boys, really threat girls wearing long veils different

than others?
GIRLS WEARING THE
JILBAB GAUL
- The trendy veil
- 45-50% of the female students of UGM
- Stylish and fashionable
- Often hang out with friends, also with boys and have
boyfriends
- Matches ones personality
- You have to be consistent wearing it
- Listens to different music styles, watch tv, buys Islamic
fashion magazines and goes to cafs
- Never been to night club since she wears a veil
OPINIONS
- Also suits behavior: communicative and sociable
- Not be too attractive, as one purpose is to avoid the
attention of the man
- Short veil is not enough
DISCUSSION
If you choose to wear a veil, a short veil isnt enough.

The girls who wear the short veil: why do you wear it? Is it
your own purpose or is it just a habit? Why dont you use the
long veil?
STUDENTS WITHOUT
A VEIL
- 40-45% of the girls
- Religion is something seen as rather personal and not
something one should show off with
OPINIONS
- Associated with bad behavior: easygoing lifestyle,
including drinking alcohol, not fasting and having seks
before marriage
- Have less self control
DISCUSSION
Girls not wearing a veil are out of control

What do you think about being a muslim, but not wearing veil
for the girls?
ISLAMIC YOUTH
CULTURE- A LIFESTYLE
- The transitions between education and work, dating and
mating, and childhood and adulthood are increasingly
prolonged in lives of young people
- Identity-formation in an uncertain world, Islamic faith may
provide certainty
- Combination of lifestyle characteristics with religious faith
- Choosing what to consume Identity
- Market for Islamic products
- Multiple identities as fashionable Muslims
- Freedom of choice is an important value for a young
- Large discrepancy between what people say and what
people do
DISCUSSION
- The islam is no longer pure
- Is it better to have one proper way of doing things, or
better to have freedom in your choice
