Tuesday, August 30, 2016 pencil
Class begins at 8:30

Disclaimer: This session will be recorded for learning purposes. Learning purposes
include: a lesson review for students who are absent, students who want to review
for a test, etc.
While youre waiting write an idea of
something you would like to
investigate more in science in the
chat box.
The mission of the Georgia Cyber Academy is to provide an
exemplary educational experience to students in a unique and
individualized setting.
Moment of Reflection
Georgia Cyber Academy
encourages, at the start
of each day, all students,
teachers, and
administrators to
engage in a brief period
of quiet reflection for
one minute.The
moment of quiet
reflection is not
intended to be and shall
not be conducted as a
religious service or
exercise, but shall be
considered an
opportunity for a
moment of silent
reflection on the
anticipated activities of
Georgia Standards
S5CS1. Students will be aware of the importance of curiosity,
honesty, openness, and skepticism in science and will exhibit
these traits in their own efforts to understand how the world
works.
a.
Keep records of investigations and observations and do not
alter the records later.
b.
Carefully distinguish observations from ideas and speculation
about those
observations.
c.
Offer reasons for findings and consider reasons suggested by
others.

d. Take responsibility for understanding the importance of

being safety conscious
1. What are the steps of the scientific
method?

2. Why do scientists follow these

steps?

Write these in your science journal. We will

discuss the answers at the end of the lesson.
What will be learning and working
on this week?
History in Science:
What do you think are some crazy
ideas that people believed at one
time, but scientist investigated and
proved to be incorrect?
An easy way to remember:
Pizza- Problem (state the Problem)
Is- Information (collect Information)
Hot- Hypothesis (form a Hypothesis)
Especially- Experiment or procedure
Double- Data (collect, record and analyze
Data)
Cheese- Conclusion (form a Conclusion)

Pizza is hot especially double cheese!

Vocabulary :
Model: a physical object that looks much like the
real thing for example, a model of a human brain.
Scientists use modes so they can picture the parts
of something and see how those parts fit together.

Simulation : a process that lets you do or

experience something that is like something that
occurs in nature. For instance, a brain simulator is
a computer program made up of images of the
brain. It allows surgeons to practice doing
complicated surgeries on the brain like a video
game.
Types of Scientific Investigations
Type Purpose Example
Question
Field study To watch How does this
animals and type of bird
plants in their migrate?
natural habitat
Systematic To collect Why is the
observation information average
over time to temperature
look for dropping?
patterns or
trends
Open-ended To investigate What is a
exploration something with tornado?
a general
question
instead of a
specific one
Controlled to test one Is this medicine
OLS Lesson One Activity:
Observation in Science
OLS Lesson One Activity:
Observation in Science
Complete Unit 1: Lesson 1
Learning Target:

1. What are the steps of the scientific

method?
The steps are: state the problem, gather
information, form a hypothesis, conduct the
experiment, record and analyze data, draw a
conclusion, but can be repeated as needed.
2. Why do scientists follow these steps?
The scientific method is a way to ask and answer
scientific questions by making observations and
doing experiments. Scientists use this method to
modify theories or to discard them.
Ticket Out the Door

How do we observe in
science?
Type your answer in the chat and
go to OLS Unit 1, Lesson 1 and
complete the assessment.
