1. Introduction
1.1 Need:
1. Poor design affect badly
2. If body posture when one sits and drives is not in a comfort
level,it is natural that his body will feel pressured and
burdened.

1.2 Challenges:
3. To accommodate diverse population of drivers
4. Subjective testing

3
Department of Mechanical Engineering, MIT College of Engineering, Pune
4. Necessity of consideration
Promoting seat designs and driving practices that would
reduce driver fatigue and increase vehicle safety,
Establishing more effective methods for evaluating and
estimating fatigue, and
Understanding the relationship between driver fatigue and
seat designs under different driving conditions.

3. Literature Survey
The anthropometric data collected were used to determine the correlation
between the parameters that influenced safety level and driving comfort.

6 Department of Mechanical Engineering, MIT College of Engineering, Pune

There is 4 types of driving postures were introduced to the
subjects. Type B posture is the most preferred of driving
posture adopted among the subjects (59%) followed by Type C
(23%) and Type D (15%). Type A (3%) was least preferred
driving posture used by the subjects.

5. Case Study
1. Drivers rode on both the air-inflated seat cushion and their original foam seat
cushion during their regularly scheduled routes.

2. The drivers were then asked a series of questions to establish

demographic information that may influence driver responses. This
includes information such as physical characteristics, driving history,
and health information.

6.PLANS FOR
IMPLEMENTATION
1. Write a series of papers at SAE technical conferences to highlight the benefits
of using aPcrms to evaluate truck seat cushion designs for driver fatigue,

2. Make presentations at industry partners, trade shows, and conferences,

3. Write journal paper(s) to create a permanent reference to this work, and

4. Write a seat cushion fatigue evaluation standard as part of the SAE

Human Factors Subcommittee

7.CONCLUSION

1. Investigate the effect of vehicle seat design on operator fatigue and

vehicle safety

2. Further validate recently developed methodologies for

evaluating the effect of vehicle seats on operator fatigue

3. Provide design guidelines that can be used for evaluating and

improving fatigue characteristics of vehicle seats.
