What was the immediate impact
of Lincolns election on the South?
Following the election of Lincoln in 1860,
South Carolina officially seceded from the
Union fearing that Southern power and
influence had been weakened and that
slavery was soon to be abolished
South Carolina was soon followed by six
additional Southern States who quickly
formed a new government (Confederate
States of America-CSA) and elected
Jefferson Davis (MS) as its first (and only)
president
Lincolns greatest challenge was going to
be keeping the Union together
How did Lincoln approach the Southern secession
issue in his First Inaugural Address?
On March 4, 1861, Lincoln was sworn in
as the 16th President of the United
States
In his inaugural address, Lincoln
attempted to reassure the South that
he had NO intention of interfering with
slavery WHERE IT ALREADY EXISTED, but
it would not be permitted to expand to
the West However, he warned the
South, particularly those states that had
already seceded, that he was also
intent on PRESERVING THE UNION and
What were some of the advantages the
North had going into the war?
The North had several major
advantages going into the
war:
Larger population
Larger and more efficient
transportation and communications
network (railroad, canals, telegraph)
Larger manufacturing capacity
(factories and raw materials)
More money (most large banks and
cash reserves were in the North)
The North had a fully functional,
experienced, and equipped Navy
What were the advantages of the
Confederacy going into the war?
The South had few
advantages going into the
war, but the few they had
would have a big impact
early in the war:
They were fighting on their
home territory
They were highly motivated
(underappreciated advantage in
combat)
They (initially) had the better
What was the Union war plan
going into the war?
* Aged, military leader,
General Winfield Scott
(veteran of the War of
1812 and the Mexican-
American War) devised
the Anaconda Plan: 1.

economy with a naval

How and Why did Tennessee
Succeed?
Geography played a large role in
slavery in Tennessee and that
reflected the peoples loyalties to
the Union of the Confederacy
The flatter, and more fertile, soil
conditions of West and Middle
Tennessee favored farming cash
crops that required slave labor
(cotton and tobacco)
The rugged, rocky, and much less
fertile ridges and valleys of East
Tennessee favored small farmers
and staple crops (corn, wheat,
How and Why did Tennessee
Succeed?
In February, 1861, Tennessee votes
to stay in the Union with large
support in the East and a small
majority in Middle Tennessee

However, after Ft Sumter and

Lincoln's subsequent call for troops
in April, Governor IshamHarris calls
for another vote in May

This time, the vote fails largely

because of the shift in opinion made

How and Why did Tennessee
Succeed?
The First Battle of Bull Run
(Called Battle of Manassas
by the South)was the first
major battle of the war
It was an overwhelming
Confederate victory that
shocked both sides (legend
of Stonewall Jackson begins)
It shattered the Norths
hopes of winning the war
quickly
